PhD in Transformative Technologies for Pharmaceutical Science
Rest WS · 2026-05-15 · via Postgraduate Study

The Transformative Technologies for Pharmaceutical Science (TTPS) PhD programme is a four year fully-funded doctoral training programme that aims to develop future leaders in data-driven approaches to pharma research and development that are informed by and provide new insight into our understanding of biological processes.

This is a joint programme with GSK and the Universities of Oxford and Southampton. Students will undertake a 16-week cohort-based training programme based at the University of Oxford, including both technical and professional skills training (e.g. scientific writing, presentation skills, responsible research, and ethics). Students will then complete two 11-week rotation projects, one of which will be expanded to the doctoral project. All students will have a Cambridge supervisor and a GSK supervisor.

Students will be expected to submit their thesis at the end of the fourth year.

Core skills training in the TTPS programme include research software engineering, biological modelling, structure-based drug discovery, and image analysis.

All students will undertake a 3-month internship at GSK to gain work experience in a commercial context, with students encouraged to undertake these in groups to foster cohort cohesion.

Part-time study, whilst not the norm, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

By the end of the programme, candidates will have acquired excellent skills, experience and knowledge to undertake postdoctoral work (research, teaching or both) or another related profession outside academia.

The University hosts and attends fairs and events throughout the year, in the UK and across the world. We also offer online events to help you explore your options:

· Discover Cambridge: Master’s and PhD study webinars - these Spring events provide practical information about applying for postgraduate

study.

· Postgraduate Virtual Open Days - taking place in November each year, the Open Days focus on subject and course information.
