IT Apprentice (Level 3)
Anonymous · 2026-05-22 · via University of Cambridge

Based within the School of Biological Sciences, the Department of Biochemistry is a globally recognized hub for research and education, drawing talent from across the world. We are seeking an IT Apprentice to assist us in delivering a robust digital infrastructure that our diverse scientific initiatives depend upon. In this role, you will work toward a Level 3 qualification while providing hands-on technical support to maintain the vital IT services that power our department.

We are looking for a natural problem solver who is genuinely excited by the intersection of people and technology. This apprenticeship is designed as a foundational learning journey, so no prior IT experience or technical knowledge is required. What matters most is your motivation to learn quickly, your persistence in finding solutions, and your ability to explain them clearly to our diverse community of stakeholders. We will provide the hands-on environment to master these skills, to supplement the theory provided via your course provider through classroom and online sessions. You will be fully supported by the IT team to ensure your success, in addition to the support provided by your course provider.

As an apprentice, you will follow Firebrand's Information Communication Technician programme to gain the foundational skills needed for our Department. This includes achieving your CompTIA A+ credentials, a powerful asset for any IT professional. Your schedule will include a minimum of 20% dedicated study time during work hours, though you should also expect to invest some personal time into exam preparation and coursework. We believe in learning by doing, so we will work with you to find projects that match your interests while meeting our technical needs.

We are committed to diversity and welcome applicants of all ages (16+) who are not currently in full-time education. Whether you are just starting out or looking for a career change, your lack of prior IT experience isn't a barrier. While we especially value an interest in or experience with academic environments, we encourage anyone with a passion for technology to apply. The University is a vast network with constant opportunities, making it an ideal environment to develop your skills and build a long-term IT career.

While a permanent position within this specific IT team is not guaranteed upon completion, the apprenticeship is designed to be a springboard for your career.

Admission to the scheme is subject to an eligibility check by the course provider. This ensures you meet government funding criteria, such as not already holding an equivalent degree and establishes your start date. As part of this, your Maths and English skills will be verified to ensure you meet the program's mandatory requirements for graduation.

Fixed-term: The funds are available for this position for 17 months, in the first instance.

Click the 'Apply' button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.
