Up-and-coming consumer electronics brand Fosi Audio has announced the launch of a new and compact CD Player with a high-end transport mechanism, integrated DAC and headphone amplifier with a 3.5mm jack. The launch comes at a time when CDs are enjoying something of a resurgence in popularity after years of steady decline.
Named for Beta Ursae Majoris — a guiding star historically used for navigation — Fosi’s new Merak CD player is a personal digital audio device based around a high-quality audio architecture that includes a CS43131 DAC chip and a TPA6120 amplifier.
Merak supports playback of digital files up to 16-bit/96kHz and has a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 124dB and ultra-low distortion. This makes it suitable for use with headphones, amplifiers and active speakers.

The new player has a professional-grade CD transport mechanism and servo system for stable and accurate retrieval of digital data. It offers gapless playback for uninterrupted listening of live recordings and classical works. The transparent top-loading design showcases album artwork and helps to minimize disc wear.
As well as spinning old-school CDs, Merak also functions as a digital audio hub. It has an optical output with a low-jitter clock so it can be used as a dedicated digital transport for a high-end external DAC. There’s also USB playback and one-touch CD ripping for archiving CDs into lossless WAV format.
Other features include electronic anti-shock protection, an OLED screen for displaying playback details. There is support for multiple playback modes like repeat and shuffle, plus it can accommodate USB drives up to 128GB capacity.
The Fosi Audio Merak CD Player is available now through Fosi Audio’s official sales channel and is priced at $139.99 / £125.99 / €149.99.
