Here’s a piece of technology that launched today and which Narcissus would have appreciated, had he been born in the time of smartphones. It’s the Insta360 Snap, a compact and magnetic screen that lets users use their smartphone’s rear camera for taking higher-quality and sharper selfies and videos.
The rear camera on most smartphones is the best and most high-resolution way of taking photos. The camera you use to take a selfie is on the same side of the phone’s display, but it’s usually a much lower-resolution device. If you want to use the rear camera to take a selfie, there’s no way of being able to see the live preview to frame yourself properly, unless you use a mirror, which is rather awkward.
Now Insta360 Snap solves this little conundrum by providing a second display for your phone that clamps magnetically to a MagSafe phone or case. There are two models of the Insta360 Snap available, one with a light for taking better photos and one without. The choice is yours. The built-in light of the more expensive model provides adjustable lighting with color control for more flattering skin tones.
The Insta360 Snap attaches to the rear of a MagSafe phone or case and uses a USB-C cable to draw power and video signal from the host phone.

The Snap display attaches to the back of a smartphone and uses a USB-C cable to draw both its power and the video signal from the phone’s USB-C port. When turned on, it lets you see yourself clearly using the feed from the superior rear camera. You’ve just enabled much clearer selfies and videos. It’s a neat and innovative device.
Thanks to the Insta360 Snap’s real-time preview, users can access the full resolution of the main camera. With an iPhone 17 Pro Max, that’s up to 48-megapixels instead of the 18-megapixel resolution offered by the front camera.
As well as providing real-time previews, the Insta360 Snap Selfie Screen with Light, which was designed in collaboration with AMIRO, a leader in professional makeup optics, you have the option of adjustable color and brightness settings for creating more evenly lit images.
With its integrated USB-C wired connection, there’s no need to pair the Snap with its host camera. The lag on the display is a negligible 30ms; there’s no display battery to charge. The device just needs to be plugged in, snapped on and you are ready to shoot.
For an extra $10, you can have a ring light built into the Insta360 Snap which has adjustable brightness and color temperature settings.

The display is also a touchscreen, which mirrors the smartphone’s main screen and that means key settings and phone functions can be controlled while taking selfies or videos. There is also a one-tap mirroring function that instantly flips the preview for a more natural selfie view, making it easier to adjust hair, makeup and facial expressions.
The Insta360 Snap works with native camera apps as well as many third‑party camera and editing apps. It includes a cover that protects the screen when it’s stored and flips over when shooting to minimize accidental phone screen touches.
The display is compatible with a wide range of phones, including Apple’s iPhone 15 and upwards. One important caveat is that the snap doesn’t work with the iPhone 16e and 17e, because those two budget models don’t support display mirroring through the USB-C port. That’s a shame, but Apple had to cut costs somewhere.
The Insta360 Snap Selfie display comes in two versions: one with and one without lighting. The Snap Selfie Display is available now from Amazon and the Insta360 Store, as well as select retailers. The price for the unlit Snap is $79.99 and the version with a light is $89.99. To see if your phone is compatible, visit the Insta360 Snap website.
