New iPhone 17 Models Go On Sales At Apple Stores Across The Country

Apple’s next-gen iPhone software, iOS 27, will go on general release in September (read this for exactly when that’s expected to be). But it’s already available as a developer beta, available to all. The second developer beta is here now. So, what are the benefits of downloading it now and why should you hold off for now? Read this for details of how to download and read on for the pros and cons of installing the new software now.

It’s a big download, by the way, over 11GB on my iPhone Air, coming from the first developer beta, so it could be bigger if this is your first encounter. Practice patience.

Which iPhones Support iOS 27?

There’s good and bad news…

If your iPhone supports the current software, iOS 26, then the good news is it’ll work with iOS 27 as well. The list runs from the iPhone 11 series right through to the latest iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air, including the second- and third-generation iPhone SE.

However, though iOS 27 is jammed with new features, not all will be enjoyed by all models. For instance, Apple Intelligence is only available for the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all models in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series, and iPhone Air.

Siri AI And The Hardware Limitations Of Apple Intelligence

Siri AI is mostly available — but some features aren’t

Apple Intelligence is especially of interest now because it comes with the new Siri AI. Note that there’s a waitlist for trying Siri AI. Once you sign up, you’ll get a notification when it’s live, which can take days.

While Siri AI is available on all Apple Intelligence-compatible models, there are a couple of more advanced elements, AI Dictation and expressive Siri voices, which are further restricted, to iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Read more about that here.

Warning: Why You Shouldn't Install iOS 27 On Your Main iPhone

It may be stable, but calamity can still strike beta testers

Apple advises, and I agree, if you’re going to install the beta, it shouldn’t be on an iPhone you depend on. Although the first beta seemed stable, and the second one looks to have improvements, there will be what one Redditor calls “random screwiness,” so you don’t want it on the phone that you use for banking or whatever other critical things you’re doing.

iOS 27 Second Developer Beta: Early Tester Reactions

So far, so good

The reactions have been positive, with another user commenting on Reddit that it’s been “incredibly stable… honestly so smooth.” There are comments about battery life being worse — but that may be down to indexing as the release is just hours old.

Another Redditor points out “Since there’s a waitlist for Siri AI, you might want to go ahead and do it now to get on the waitlist, assuming you’re interested in using Siri AI.”

The Initial Verdict: Should You Download iOS 27 Beta 2?

If you’ve taken on board the warnings above, and on the understanding that things will go wrong, the initial responses are positive enough to suggest that it’s worth upgrading from the first developer beta to this, the second beta of iOS 27.
