Another new iPhone update has just landed and it provides a new feature for some and a bug fix for all.

This is just the same as other iOS 26 updates, that is, it’s for all phones from the iPhone 11 and more recent. The latest models, including the iPhone 17 series, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, are all covered by iOS 26.4.1.
It’s straightforward to install: open the Settings app on your iPhone, click on General, then Software Update. Next, select Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download was reasonably small, under 700MB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Apple’s release notes are very short on this update, specifying only that it “provides bug fixes,” and nothing more. It’s since been learned, though, that it does provide a key update to enterprise users, which is already in iOS 26.4 for the rest of us: Stolen Device Protection is on by default for the first time. Stolen Device Protection is a major iPhone feature that’s been around since January 2024 but has always been down to the user to activate. Now, for everyone, it’s on automatically.
As for bug fixes, so far it’s been revealed that an issue with iCloud data syncing, which has affected more devices than just the iPhone, has been put right here.
There are no security updates in this release. “This update has no published CVE entries,” Apple said in a support document.
So far, as they say, so good. A number of Redditors have gone out of their way to praise the improvement in battery since installing iOS 26.4.1, not least, perhaps, because it’s a small update that hasn’t required massive re-indexing. Nonetheless, the initial response have been positive.
Even though the Stolen Device Protection change only affects enterprise users, this update is worth having for the fix to iCloud data syncing. There have been few surprises as the week went on, so the verdict remains that you should upgrade.
