Surprise Galaxy S27 Leak Gives Samsung New Options

Alongside introducing a new wider variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 this summer, Samsung is also planning to debut a new premium model with the Galaxy S27 lineup next year. But what will Samsung do with its new Galaxy S27 Pro?

Samsung Plans To Release New Galaxy S27 Pro Next Year

ET News reports that Samsung will add a new Galaxy S27 Pro model next year, which will sit alongside the Galaxy S27, Galaxy S27 Plus, and Galaxy S27 Ultra. Specifications, including the display size, haven’t been finalized yet, but the new handset is expected to be a premium device that sits adjacent to the Ultra model.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because Apple released four iPhones last year: the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The key difference between the two premium models (the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max) is display size, with the Pro Max running the same specifications as its smaller sibling but with a 6.9-inch display. Google follows the same strategy with its Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

Samsung may follow suit with the Galaxy S27 Pro, making it smaller than the Ultra, which is a big, cumbersome phone small hands might struggle with. Sources speaking with ET News claim that the Galaxy S27 Pro might exclude the S Pen that comes built into the Galaxy S Ultra while “sharing most other technologies.” But what does that mean exactly? Let’s explore.

What Will The Galaxy S27 Pro Look Like?

History tells us that when Samsung introduces a new model to its flagship lineup, it’s often a testing ground for new technology. It used the Galaxy S25 Edge last year to debut a new mounting system that allowed parts to be placed closer together, and a redesigned the camera setup to shave millimetres off the phone.

That device-slimming technology was repurposed in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and likely will be used in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide and Galaxy Z Fold 7 also have roots in the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which launched with a bigger screen and a 200MP camera—two features that had never been seen on any Galaxy foldable before. In 2014, the Korean company released the Note Edge, which introduced curved display edges. A year later, the flagship Galaxy S6 Edge had curved edges.

Don’t be surprised if the Galaxy S27 Pro adds technology not available in other Galaxy S27 models. We might finally see the introduction of a silicon carbon battery in the Galaxy S27 Pro, which Samsung has explicitly said it’s working on. These batteries use silicon-based anodes to achieve much higher energy density than traditional graphite-based lithium-ion cells, allowing for more power in a thinner frame.

The space saved by ditching the S Pen also gives Samsung an option for a bigger battery, whether it is silicon carbon or standard lithium-ion. Also, if Samsung decides to make the Galaxy S27 Pro smaller than the Ultra, there’s precedent for increasing the battery size in a more compact phone. The base Galaxy S26 battery was increased by 300mAh compared to the Galaxy S25 this year, for example.

The Galaxy S27 Pro Gives Samsung New Price Options

Like every hardware maker, Samsung has been hit by the memory chip crisis, with the cost of flash and NAND memory rapidly rising because they’re being vacuumed up by AI data centers. This forced Samsung into a price rise for the Galaxy S26 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (in Korea), and the Galaxy A57.

A smaller Galaxy S27 Pro could give Samsung some room to drop the price of a version of its premium model. Both Apple and Google do this; their “Pro” and “XL” variants have premium specifications but a smaller display and a lower price. Removing the S Pen offers even more savings for the company that may be passed on to consumers.
