Update May 30: this post, first published on Friday, May 29, was updated on May 30 with news of the outage being resolved, with details of Apple’s comment and when it came to an end.

If you’re having trouble getting Apple Music to play, that’s down to an outage, confirmed by Apple itself. Here’s what’s known about the situation and when it was resolved.

Apple’s System Status Dashboard Reflects The Break

Among all the services with glowing green circles indicating all was well, listed alphabetically from App Store through to Weather, there was one red triangle. “Apple Music — Outage,” the Apple System Status page said.

A Disruption Impacting Millions

The outage began at 11.40 Eastern on Friday, May 29, so at the time of writing, it’s been down for around five hours. The outage has impacted multiple countries, including the U.S., and reaching as far as Australia, Brazil, France, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea and Spain.

“The company’s System Status pages for each country describe the issue as an ‘outage,’ rather than the less serious ‘issue’ designation, explaining that ‘some users are affected,’ and that they ‘may be experiencing intermittent issues with this service,’” 9to5Mac reported.

The Third Major Outage This Spring

It’s the third outage for the service in two months, at least, and one problem lasted more than a day. There’s no indication that this issue will last that long, not least because reports on Downdetector seem mostly to be trending downwards at the moment, indicating that things may slowly be returning to normal, 9to5Mac went on.

That said, a recent check of Downdetector in the U.K. showed there were still spikes of problems being reported.

What Affected Subscribers Should Do

It doesn’t mean that it won’t be working for you, but if you’re finding no musical joy, don’t take it personally. I’ll update this post when the service is fully resumed.

And in the meantime, there’s nothing to be done. Maybe it’s time to break out those dusty CDs for a while.

Outage Resolved At 9.30 p.m. EDT

Update: the system status page has now changed to say the outage has been resolved. "Apple Music — Resolved Outage,” it begins.

“Yesterday 11.40 a.m. — 9.30 p.m. Some users were affected. Users may have experienced intermittent issues with this service,” the site goes on.

The times quoted refer to the local time zone, in this case Eastern Daylight Time. Checking the U.K. site showed a return to normal at a similar time, with the issue resolved at 1.30 a.m. British Summer Time.

Checking back to Downdetector and the Apple Music panel now says, “User reports show no current problems with Apple Music.” This chimes with the comments below the panel, with the last complaint from a user who couldn’t log in happening around 9.15 p.m. EDT.

Time to pack the CDs and vinyl away again, then?
