A Surprise In Timing: Why September 1?

Though the change of personnel had been predicted, the timing is something of a surprise. Though a report in the Financial Times suggested that this would be the year Cook would hand over the reins, other analysts thought the FT was wrong and it would be later.

The announcement came from Apple in a Newsroom post which confirmed that Ternus, currently senior vice president of hardware engineering, will succeed Cook on Sept. 1, 2026 — immaculately timed so that Apple’s big September event will be in Ternus’ hands.

Cook joined Apple in 1998, recruited by Steve Jobs at a time when many felt the company was on the brink of failing. Cook told me in the past that people advised him against taking at job with the company, but that Jobs persuaded him.

It turns out he was right to go against the perceived wisdom, as the company has grown massively, increasing market capitalization by more than 1,000%.

Cook became CEO in 2011, so he will have served in the role for 15 years almost to the day, when Sept. 1 rolls around. His achievements will include introducing the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro. Just as importantly, he reset Apple’s focus to include services which, from Apple Pay to Apple TV to Apple Music, have proved highly successful.

Ternus, by comparison, has been in the company almost as long as Cook, joining in 2001.

There is significant continuity here, with Ternus describing Cook as his mentor. “I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century,” he said.

Values have been especially important to Cook, whose public engagement and profound social conscience have been crucial to the company’s direction for years.

As executive chairman, Cook will continue to engage with policymakers globally, ensuring his advocacy for privacy and the environment remains a core part of Apple’s DNA.
