Apple iPhone 11

Apple

In June, Apple will announce which iPhones will be compatible with the next iPhone software, iOS 27. A new leak claims to have answered that question now, and if right, more iPhones are dropping off the list at once than usual.

In fact, the leaker suggests that four iPhones will cease to be supported. That’s more than any other year apart from 2022, when iOS 16 dropped support for five iPhones.

The iOS 27 Compatibility Leak: A Shift In Support

It’s a normal process that, when new iOS software is released, that some iPhones are no longer supported. It doesn’t happen every year: the phones that worked with iOS 13 also handled iOS 14 and iOS 15, that is, there was a three-year period where no iPhones lost support.

However, according to a post on Weibo from Instant Digital, 2026 is not going to be one of those years when no iPhone is dropped.

The Weibo post lists the phones which, the leaker claims, will be compatible with iOS 27 and it runs from the iPhone 12 onwards. That means that four phones drop from the list. The first three are phones released in 2019: iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max. The fourth is the iPhone SE 2nd generation, which first appeared in spring 2020.

What This Means For iPhone Users

The first thing to say is that if you have an iPhone 11 series or iPhone SE 2nd generation, it’s not going to stop working when iOS 27 is released in September. It will work just as it’s doing today. But it won’t gain the new features that iOS 27 brings.

It’s also worth noting that while it won’t run iOS 27, it’s not the end of the line for security updates. Apple is likely to support iOS 26, which those four iPhones can run, for some time.
