“[I need to] congratulate Arsenal, Mikel [Arteta] and the backroom staff, the fans for the Premier League which they deserved. I would love to have arrived in the last moment. Today the fatigue was there. Bournemouth had 12 days to prepare. The impact from the fresh players was not good enough.
“We fought a lot and we prepare next season. With the club, I always talk. But not now. The first thing you should understand, I have to talk with the chairman first. We will talk in the next few days. First, we have to talk with the chairman what we have to do.
“I am fine. Now is the moment with the chairman to talk. After that we will see what happens. Next season, we will be back. Manchester City will be back. We will be competing to the end in the competitions.
“I would love to arrive in the last moment against Aston Villa. Today we missed that pace, situation that is required to play against Bournemouth. they are a really good side. The travel to London from the Chelsea game meant it was not a really good final. Our calendar in this part of the season was really tough.
“Let me talk to the chairman. I love the fans more. I love that place. Let me talk about my club. I was incredibly focused on my job.”

Arteta inherited a toxic mess – this is how he fixed Arsenal
Link copied to clipboard
During a recent transfer window, a secret meeting was arranged for Mikel Arteta and one of Arsenal’s top targets. The plan was for it to be a relaxed sort of occasion. Food on the table, football on the television, easy conversation. An opportunity for Arteta and Arsenal to get to know the player, and for the player and his advisors to get to know them.
It soon became clear, though, that Arteta was in no mood for casual chit-chat. Not long after the player arrived, the Arsenal manager asked to take him into another room. Just the two of them. No others allowed. The player agreed, perhaps to the slight unease of his entourage, and off they went. The door was shut behind them.
What followed, Telegraph Sport understands, was the most extraordinary set of noises. Arteta could be heard banging on tables, slamming on walls, jumping around the room and shouting. He had a presentation prepared, about how the player would fit into Arsenal’s set-up, and he delivered it with chest-thumping, hair-raising passion.

“At the beginning of the season you did not imagine it. It has been so nice and we have a chance to fight for the Champions League in the last game and we really deserve this, especially for the game we played so well. We have not won the game but it does not matter. I have enjoyed it so much, how we played and the personality we showed. We had great chances to score the second one and we wanted to win the game but I have enjoyed it. Today has been a good reflection of the club. I am very happy for the club, the players, the supporters and the staff. It is the best way to finish with something you can touch I cannot ask for anything more.
“Pep [Guardiola] is the top of the top. He has won everything. It was a difficult game for them, they played three days ago with the tension of a final. We made them play a difficult game and they were obviously tired but they have this quality. It makes it even more nice when you play like this against an opposition that are so good.
“We have a special group of players. They are consistent and always there. Right now there is nothing about my future in my head, I just want to celebrate and push it. We have Europa League, next let’s maximise our options. Can we take the last Champions League spot? I still do not know where I will go but I am in no rush, let’s finish on a high.”

After 22 years, Arsenal are Premier League champions again. It’s an enormous moment in the modern history of one of English football’s most storied clubs. The party in north London will go long into the night.

Andoni Iraola has done an outstanding job at Bournemouth and his parting gift is to ensure the club plays in Europe next season for the first time. Where will Iraola end up? Will he take another Premier League job or go abroad, perhaps back to Spain? He has also done his boyhood friend Mikel Arteta a huge favour tonight.
Arsenal are crowned Premier League champions

Manchester City cannot find a winner so Arsenal are crowned Premier League champions for the first time in over two decades. Pep Guardiola, if he is indeed to bow out after the final day of the season, will not finish his tenure at Manchester City with another Premier League trophy.
Bournemouth, with this point, book their place in Europe next season and still have an outside chance of a Champions League spot.

A stunning goal that will be celebrated not just on the south coast but in north London as well. Tavernier plays the ball down the left side to Truffert, who cuts it across the face of the penalty area to Kroupi. He takes one touch before curling into the far corner. He used Khusanov as a way of shielding the shot from Donnarumma. It is a fine finish.

‘Why Guardiola decided to quit Manchester City’
Link copied to clipboard
It was last season that Pep Guardiola invited an opposition manager into his Etihad Stadium office and told him he wanted to leave Manchester City but could not do it yet.
The manager thought Guardiola was joking – and the mood of that chat was certainly jovial. Indeed, during his time in England Guardiola has earned a reputation as one of the most sociable foreign managers, fully embracing the tradition of the post-match drink that was eschewed by the likes of Arsène Wenger.
But the nub of it was this: Guardiola told his colleague he was tired, he needed a rest – but he could not go because his close friend, Txiki Begiristain, was stepping down as director of football.

“It is going to be an emotional one for sure. We have a job to do today, and we want to win.”
On the title race:
“We will have to wait and see; last game [of the season] we will see what happens. It is going to be tough. I have been part of this team. Hopefully, we can win, but we know how hard it is going to be.”
Andoni Iraola speaking ahead of his final home game in charge of Bournemouth
Link copied to clipboard
“It is going to be emotional but probably after the game. The game is so difficult, you get ready and prepare so many things that you are focused on the game, on the difficulty of the game, to give our best version. For us it is massive, obviously. We want to play in Europe next season, we know we are close but we are still not there. We need a result today. Probably the biggest of the challenges, Manchester City arriving in the last week fighting for the title. But if we do it, it is massive. So we will give our best and let’s see if it is enough.
“I suppose he [Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta] will be supporting us today. He also knows a lot of people in the other side. I want to win because it is massive for us and we have a massive opportunity. I understand the interest in the game but I want to do it for Bournemouth. We have not been in touch this week. We will talk after the season ends, definitely.”
Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports

“We have to win today against a tough opponent and then we will see what happens. It is a long trip to London [for the FA Cup final], go home and then come here. This is the final effort with two games to go and the players will give everything. How many games are they [Bournemouth] unbeaten? It speaks for itself and they have had an incredible second half of the season. Huge credit to them. Zero [rumours about his future having an impact on his team tonight], absolutely zero!

Chelsea to launch legal complaint over Man City’s Maresca pursuit
Link copied to clipboard
Chelsea are shaping up for a legal battle with Manchester City over their putative appointment of Enzo Maresca, who left Stamford Bridge in contested circumstances at the start of the year.
With Pep Guardiola expected to leave City after a decade in charge, the first choice to replace him is the Italian who departed Chelsea abruptly earlier this season. Although the terms of that split have never been commented on publicly by either side, the allegation that Maresca had told Chelsea’s ownership that he was in talks with City has not been disputed.
The expectation is that Chelsea will seek compensation from City, with the added threat of disclosure about the terms of Maresca’s departure from Stamford Bridge, and the events in the months leading up to it. Neither club have commented on the situation.

Andoni Iraola is leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season but so is defender Marcos Senesi. Where will the Argentinian end up? Could he be moving to another Premier League club?
Oliver Brown: Guardiola’s messy exit a distraction Man City can ill afford
Link copied to clipboard
In the end, the one farewell Pep Guardiola neglected to choreograph was his own. After a decade at Manchester City, he has grown acquainted with the art of goodbyes, memorably declaring through tears at Sergio Agüero’s departure: “We cannot replace him. We cannot.” Never have his words felt more fitting than today, with the departure of perhaps the greatest genius English football has known threatening to leave a crater in the national game. But what rankles, for both the club and the manager, is the timing. There is an artform to delivering an announcement this seismic, and the final week of a Premier League season, with City still technically in contention for another domestic treble, is assuredly not the moment.
There is never a middle ground when you lose a figure this transcendent. When the news of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement emerged in May 2013, it had a galvanising effect, coming in sufficient time for him to be granted a guard of honour at his final home game at Old Trafford. It helped, too, that Manchester United had already wrapped up the title. Jürgen Klopp, by contrast, mistimed the statement of his exit from Liverpool in January 2024, delivering a heartfelt video message to supporters but then watching as the club’s campaign disintegrated into a lap-of-honour tour so long it would have embarrassed Frank Sinatra.
Guardiola to leave Man City with Maresca expected replacement
Link copied to clipboard
Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the season.
City’s game against Aston Villa at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday is expected to be Guardiola’s final match after a trophy-laden decade in charge, bringing to an end one of the most extraordinary managerial reigns in history.
Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea manager, is expected to replace him.
City’s FA Cup triumph over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday was the 15th major trophy – 20 including Community Shields, the Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup – Guardiola has won during his 10 years at the club, during which time he has been credited with revolutionising the way the game is played in England.
Guardiola has repeatedly batted away questions about his future since it emerged last December that Maresca was high on City’s list of candidates to replace their manager in the event that he walked away at the end of the season.

Win or the title is Arsenal’s
Link copied to clipboard
Manchester City travel to the south coast to face Bournemouth, knowing they have to win to remain in the Premier League title race. Following Arsenal’s win against Burnley last night, Manchester City have to win tonight or else Arsenal will be crowned champions. The build-up to this match has been dominated by reports in the last 24 hours that Pep Guardiola will step down as Manchester City boss after Sunday’s final game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa. The visitors come into tonight’s match having lifted the FA Cup on Saturday, having beaten Chelsea 1-0 in the final thanks to Antoine Semenyo’s winner.
“It is a different competition but it is better to travel to Bournemouth with the feeling that we won the FA Cup,” Guardiola said. “Bournemouth’s run is unbelievable. What they have done after losing three players from their back four is incredible. We have to break that run if we want to win the league. It is not very complicated. We have three days, they have ten days to prepare for the game. They play to qualify for the Champions League. They will bring the best version of themselves. When you arrive at the final fixtures and are playing for something important, the opponents usually do not have anything to play for, so it is easier. That is not the case tomorrow [tonight]. In the beginning stages as a manager I was more anxious. Now it is just focusing and preparing what we have to tell to the players, what they have to train in, which players you have to use, which players you have to put on the bench to have a good impact.”
Bournemouth are on a 16-match unbeaten run in the league, winning eight and drawing eight, which is the longest run of any side in the competition this season. The hosts come into this game in sixth, four points behind Liverpool in the final Champions League place. Bournemouth could go one point behind Liverpool going into the final game with a win but anything less than a win will probably end Bournemouth’s hope of a Champions League place, considering Liverpool’s superior goal difference. Both managers in the dugouts tonight appear to be in the final week of their tenures at their respective clubs as this will be Andoni Iraola’s final home game in charge of Bournemouth.
“It would be lovely for me,” said Iraola. “It would be the best way to finish these amazing three seasons. Especially this year, it has been really challenging for me as a coach because we have changed a lot the team and we have changed, not completely our style, but it is a different type of football comparing to last season. It would be the best way to end it. We are really close, but there is a big difference between being really close and getting it and grabbing it. We are in this moment where we have to do this final step. We have two chances but we want to do it tomorrow [tonight].”
When these sides met at the Etihad back in November, Manchester City won 3-1 thanks to goals from Nico O’Reilly and a double from Erling Haaland. The omens would appear to be on Manchester City’s side; they have won 16 of the 17 Premier League meetings between the sides, although Bournemouth’s only win in that span was in this fixture last season when they won 2-1.
Team news to follow shortly.
