The College of Fine Arts here organised an event commemorating the 57th death anniversary of artist T.K. Padmini on Monday evening.

College Principal Manoj Kannan, who delivered the presidential address, said Padmini was far ahead of her time in integrating feminist perspectives and elements of German Expressionism into her art. Although she mentored under K.C.S. Paniker, she carved out her own artistic voice and visual style.

Recalling her contributions to modern art in Kerala, he observed that Padmini displayed exceptional mastery in blending and fusing colours in her paintings. Remembering and reassessing Padmini was a necessity in present times, he said.

A talk titled ‘Critical approach on T.K. Padmini’ was delivered by A.S. Sajth, former Principal of the college. He situated Padmini’s works within the broader developments in modern art, referencing movements such as German Expressionism, New Objectivity, and Neo-Plasticism. He also drew parallels between Padmini and artists such as Paula Modersohn Becker and Amrita Sher-Gil.

“In her early paintings, Padmini mainly portrayed the world familiar to her, including labourers, agricultural life, and rural surroundings. However, her later works reflected the condition of women during her period and carried a distinct modernist approach in style and expression,” he said.

Following the talk, State-award-winning documentary Pattam Parathunna Penkutti, directed by Walter D’Cruz, was screened. Tracing various phases of Padmini’s life, the documentary concluded with the view that her paintings deserved a renewed reading and critical introspection.
