In view of the growing traffic congestion and rapid urban development in the city, Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta on Tuesday said a separate IPS officer would soon be appointed exclusively to oversee traffic-related issues in Visakhapatnam, despite the city already having a dedicated Traffic Police wing.

The DGP said the move was aimed at further strengthening traffic management in the fast-developing city. He noted that the officer would focus on adopting a systematic and scientific approach to traffic regulation, congestion management and future planning in view of increasing vehicular movement and expanding urbanisation. He observed that Visakhapatnam has been witnessing rapid urban growth, leading to mounting pressure on roads due to the rising population and vehicle density.

Mr. Harish Kumar Gupta was speaking after inaugurating a new police building complex near the Passport Office area in the city. The facility will house the Airport Traffic Police Station, Kancharapalem Traffic Police Station and Airport Crime Police Station under one roof.

The DGP was accompanied by Commissioner of Police Shankabrata Bagchi, Deputy Commissioners of Police and other senior officials.

Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said the Police Department has been reorganising traffic police stations in line with the city’s growing requirements. He pointed out that the Kancharapalem and Airport regions have emerged as key traffic zones owing to their connectivity and proximity to the National Highway.

He said separate police stations had been established in these strategically important areas to ensure easier public access and quicker response from police personnel. The newly inaugurated complex, located adjacent to the National Highway, would enable citizens to approach the police conveniently for both traffic and law-and-order related issues, he added.

He also said that the building complex would soon house a cybercrime police station on the fourth floor.
