Aimed at enhancing passenger safety, strengthening station security, and promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Chennai Division has introduced two electric three-wheeler mobility scooters, or trikes, at Chennai Central railway station.

The newly-inducted trike scooters are designed to enhance the mobility and rapid response capability of RPF personnel engaged in station patrolling, surveillance, and crowd management duties. Equipped with advanced features such as a siren, public address system, radio frequency identification (RFID)-based ignition system and GPS tracking facility, these vehicles will support efficient, technology-driven security operations within station premises.

An officer of RPF said with a maximum speed limit of 15 kmph, the scooters enable RPF personnel to patrol platforms, circulating areas and passenger concourses swiftly and effectively, particularly during peak hours and festive seasons involving heavy passenger movement. The mobility support provided by these scooters allows RPF staff to patrol end-to-end across all platforms with minimal physical fatigue, ensuring sustained security presence, and quicker response to passenger assistance and emergency situations.

The deployment of scooters is expected to improve surveillance coverage, strengthen crowd regulation measures, and enhance operational efficiency across busy railway stations. As part of a phased expansion plan, similar scooters will soon be introduced at other high footfall stations under Chennai Division, including Chennai Egmore, Tambaram, Arakkonam, Chengalpattu, Katpadi, and Tiruvallur, further strengthening passenger security arrangements across the Division, said RPF.
