Underground Cabling for Godavari Pushkaralu gains pace fo...

VISAKHAPATNAM

The ambitious project to lay a comprehensive underground (UG) cabling network in Rajahmundry’s Godavari Pushkara Ghats is progressing at a brisk pace. Initiated by the Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (APEPDCL), the project aims to ensure uninterrupted power supply and enhance safety along the crowded Pushkara ghats ahead of the upcoming Godavari Pushkaralu.

The power distribution utility is executing a detailed infrastructure blueprint prepared with a total estimated cost of ₹20.9 crore. The project is designed to completely eliminate overhead electricity lines near major congregation points, mitigating public safety risks and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the historic city during the mega religious festival.

Over 1 KM Completed

Speaking to The Hindu, APEPDCL Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Immadi Prudhvitej stated that the ground execution is well underway, with more than one kilometer of the underground line completed. “The Corporation has set a strict deadline of mid-August to wrap up the entire project. It is the discom’s priority to ensure that no untoward incidents occur due to electric shocks during the festival,” Mr. Prudhvitej said.

The high-profile project has drawn the attention of top-level administration with Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan inspecting the progress of the cabling works during his official visit to the Pushkara Ghats recently.

Extensive Cable Network

The ongoing project involves laying multiple variants of high-voltage underground cables across strategic routes in the city. The largest share of the work involves laying 33 KV (400 Sqmm) cables stretching over 19.24 km. Additionally, the modernised network will be supported by 11 KV (300 Sqmm) cables spanning 11.94 km and 11 KV (185 Sqmm) cables extending up to 4.928 km.

Modern Distribution Infrastructure

To facilitate seamless power distribution and quick load switching without manual intervention, modern Ring Main Units (RMUs) are being integrated into the grid. The installation roster features 13 units of 5-Way RMUs and 6 units of 3-Way RMUs.

Furthermore, to manage the massive surge in power demand expected from temporary festival lighting, shifting administrative hubs, and extensive pilgrim amenities, the department is setting up 19 new Distribution Transformers (DTRs) of 500 KVA capacity each.

Learning from Past Incidents

The transition to a complete underground network along the bathing ghats comes in the wake of stringent safety audits following past public safety challenges during large-scale religious congregations. Historically, overhead wires, hanging cables, and temporary distribution transformers near packed passages have posed significant electrocution hazards due to high humidity, wet conditions, and heavy pedestrian movement.

While the tragic 2015 Pushkaralu in Rajamahendravaram is primarily remembered for a devastating stampede at the main Pushkar Ghat, authorities are taking zero chances with public safety this time. By shifting the entire power network underground, the corporation aims to eliminate potential electrical short-circuits, loose wiring hazards, and transformer mishaps.

Tentative Schedule

The Godavari Pushkaralu is a major Hindu festival dedicated to the worship of the sacred river, occurring once every 12 years when Jupiter enters the zodiac sign of Simha (Leo). According to the tentative schedule finalized by Vedic scholars and government authorities, the upcoming 12-day festival is slated to begin on June 26, 2027, and conclude on July 7, 2027.

The mega event is expected to draw over 8 crore devotees from across the country to various pilgrim towns.
