With a view to facilitate the general public in availing themselves of the 50 per cent rebate offered by the government for the payment of traffic violation penalties, a dedicated counter was opened at the Law Court complex in Malalavadi, Mysuru, on Saturday. 

Inaugurating the facility, Principal District and Sessions Judge Ms. Usha Rani stated that the government is offering this 50 per cent discount on penalties for traffic violations committed since 1991, and appealed to motorists to make full use of the opportunity. 

She also called upon drivers and riders to follow traffic rules diligently, warning that violating road safety regulations causes accidents that can lead to the loss of precious lives.

 Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Crime) K. S. Sundar Raj was also present on the occasion.

To maximise reach and convenience, the Mysuru City Police has simultaneously opened payment booths at all 18 civil police stations and five traffic police stations across the city. 

In addition, collection counters have been set up at the old Law Courts complex, located adjacent to the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat premises, while citizens also have the option to pay their fines online via the Karnataka One portal. 

Police officials noted that a total of 45 devices are currently deployed to streamline the collection process during this promotional window, which remains in force from June 21 to July 10.

The rebate drive addresses a massive backlog in the region, with more than 1.04 crore traffic violations remaining unpaid in Mysuru City alone, amounting to an outstanding fine of over ₹450 crore. 

Similarly, within the jurisdiction of the Mysuru district police, penalties remain unpaid for more than 36.73 lakh cases, totaling over ₹184 crore.

Highlighting the gravity of the issue, a police official mentioned that certain vehicles have as many as 40 to 50 pending violations registered against them.

In response to the initiative, penalties amounting to ₹67.69 lakh had been collected up to June 24 in Mysuru City, leading to the closure of 27,357 traffic violation cases. Meanwhile, a statement by the Mysuru district police confirmed that a total of ₹3.47 lakh had been recovered up to June 26, resolving 1,370 cases. 

Authorities continue to urge motorists with pending penalties to utilise this limited-time opportunity to clear their records before the deadline.
