With the new academic year set to commence on June 4, schools across the district have begun cleaning their premises and making arrangements for reopening.

The district has around 1,200 schools, including primary, middle, high and higher secondary institutions. While the State government has announced the reopening of government, aided and private schools on June 4, most CBSE schools are scheduled to reopen next week.

Cleaning of campuses, classrooms, staff rooms and toilets, besides preparation of blackboards, began on Monday and is expected to be completed by Wednesday. Repair works to fans, tube lights and other electrical fittings, inspection of water purifiers and cleaning of overhead water tanks are also under way. With temperatures hovering around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, school authorities are ensuring that fans in classrooms are in working condition before students return.

Chief Education Officer E. Manvizhi had earlier said that textbooks and materials under various welfare schemes had already been supplied to schools and would be distributed to students on the reopening day. The welfare materials include free textbooks for students of Classes VI to XII, notebooks for those in Classes VI to X, and uniforms for students studying in Classes VI to VIII. School bags, footwear and socks will also be distributed to eligible students. Students in hill areas will receive additional items such as ankle boots, raincoats and sweaters. Geometry boxes for newly admitted students in Classes VI and IX, and geography maps for fresh admissions in Classes VI to X, are also part of the distribution.

A total of 93,889 students in the district are expected to benefit from the welfare schemes during the 2026-27 academic year. Of them, 74,120 are studying in government and municipal schools, 18,126 in aided schools and 1,643 in self-financing schools.
