Jasmeet Singh Bindra, an officer of the 1996 batch of the Indian Railway Traffic Service, assumed charge as the Chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) on Wednesday.

Prior to his new assignment, Mr. Bindra served as the Principal Chief Operations Manager of the South East Central Railway at Bilaspur.

Rich experience in logistics and transport sectors

Mr. Bindra brings with him a wide-ranging administrative and operational experience in the logistics, transportation, and energy infrastructure sectors. He served as the Divisional Railway Manager of the Ranchi Division from 2023 to 2025, following which he was posted as Executive Director, Gati Shakti, at the Railway Board in New Delhi.

His administrative portfolio also includes a significant five-year tenure as Director in the Union Ministry of Coal. During this stint, he functioned as the Government Nominee Director on the Board of Directors of major public sector undertakings, including Mahanadi Coalfields Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited

Strong academic and professional background

A trained engineer, Mr. Bindra holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Electronics Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar. He later completed his Master of Business Administration from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar.

Furthering his academic credentials in governance, he earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.

Representation at international forums

Throughout his career spanning three decades, Mr. Bindra has been the recipient of numerous institutional honours and awards for efficiency in railway operations, commercial management, and safety protocols.

He has also represented the Government of India at various international forums, inter-governmental bilateral meets, and global logistics conferences.

Local port officials and trade representatives welcomed the new Chairperson, noting that his extensive expertise in freight logistics and the Gati Shakti framework will be instrumental as VPA undergoes modernization and capacity expansion.
