The completion of Terminal II at the Ukkadam bus stand in Coimbatore has been delayed, with flooring and internal road works remaining pending.
According to the sources, the pace of work has slowed owing to the increase in the cost of construction materials. The contractor has sought an additional ₹2 crore to meet the escalated costs, and the request is under review.
Construction of the ₹8-crore Terminal II, located near Sugam Bypass Road, is under way. Work at the site was initially held up as buses continued to operate from the location. Subsequently, bus services were shifted to the newly constructed Terminal I to facilitate completion of works at Terminal II.
The facility will have a total built-up area of 2,156.06 sq. m. and provision for 30 bus bays. Of the total built-up area, 556.38 sq. m. under the commercial complex component has been completed. The bus bay structures have been completed.
Sources said the project was targeted for completion by June. However, flooring work inside the terminal and the laying of internal roads are yet to be completed, delaying the commissioning of the facility.
Officials of the Coimbatore Corporation said the contractor’s request for additional funds was being examined.
Once commissioned, Terminal II will cater to mofussil bus services, while Terminal I will handle town bus operations. The segregation of services is expected to improve bus movement and passenger handling at the Ukkadam bus stand.
