The ongoing project of modernising the Pudukottai Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is apace with a host of works completed. A few other major works being executed under this scheme at the station are expected to take some more time for completion.

Pudukottai is one of the 17 railway stations falling under the jurisdiction of the Madurai Railway Division which was chosen under the ABSS to give them a complete makeover.  A host of improvement works were identified in Pudukottai station, which falls under the NSG 5 category (Non-suburban Grade), to augment facilities and amenities.

The Pudukottai railway station falls along the busy Tiruchi-Rameswaram single line electrified BG section. The project to provide a facelift to the Pudukottai station is being executed by the Gati Shakti Unit of the Madurai Railway Division at a cost of around ₹13.53 crore.

A railway official said 14 works were identified to revamp the station and these include provision of lifts, platform surfacing, construction of a fencing wall, creation of parking lots, relocation of waiting hall and reserved lounge, construction of a skywalk and a new station building and facade among others.

The official said nine out of the 14 works have been completed till now at the station. Of these, installation of two lifts on platforms 1, 2, and 3; platform surfacing, construction of fencing wall, creation of separate parking lots for two-wheelers and cars; relocation of building for waiting hall and reserved lounge; entrance arch; works relating to circulating area and provision of an integrated passenger information system have all been completed.

However, there are a few other works which are expected to take some more time for completion. The construction of a new station building and facade besides electrical works at present under progress are expected to be completed in late September.

Similarly, construction of the skywalk is likely to be over by August. The surface upgrade work taken up on platforms 2 and 3 and provision of platform shelters are expected to be completed in June, the official added.
