This will be Curacao’s first match at a FIFA World Cup. The Caribbean side is the smallest country by population and size to qualify for the tournament, and it walks into Houston with little pressure and a chance to create one of the stories of the group stage.
On form, history and reputation, Germany should have too much for Curacao. But that is also what makes this opener delicate for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, which begins another World Cup trying to shake off the scars of early exits in 2018 and 2022.
Curacao, making its first appearance at the tournament, has little to lose and plenty to gain. With Ivory Coast and Ecuador also in Group E, Germany will know that a convincing start in Houston could set the tone for the rest of its campaign.
