Sharper Still

Aprilia hasn’t changed the formula of its SR series since the first one arrived about nine years ago. The Italian company has periodically updated the scooter with cosmetic changes, new features and increased displacement. From a 150cc scooter, it went to 160cc, and has now been bumped to 175cc, but beneath those new numbers, does the SR 175 hp-e bring anything genuinely new to the table? Well, the short answer is no. And honestly, that’s both its greatest strength and its biggest limitation.

The SR’s design has aged remarkably well. Its sharp front apron, sporty stance and signature twin headlamps still look clean, aggressive and unmistakably Aprilia. In the new Matt Prismatic Dark shade, it looks even more tempting with a premium, stealthy touch that makes you want to give it a second glance every time you walk past it.

The 174.7cc single-cylinder engine may not feel like a quantum leap from the old 160, but it does add a bit more muscle. With 13.08 bhp and 1.44 kg-m of torque, the scooter feels lively in the city and confident enough for short highway stints. Twist the throttle, and it will surge to 80 kph with enthusiasm before settling into a steady rhythm. Push further, and it’ll hit a speedo-indicated 104 kph, and though mild vibrations creep in past the 100-kph mark, it’s more of a gentle reminder of its limits than an annoyance.

Ergonomically, it’s a mixed bag. The riding posture remains sporty yet comfortable for city use, but the split-seat design doesn’t allow much room to slide back. That said, the combination of 14-inch wheels, a 121-kg kerb weight, and that firm suspension setup make it a joy to flick through traffic. It tips into corners eagerly, though it doesn’t feel quite as planted as the Yamaha Aerox when pushed hard. The front brake offers good bite, and the single-channel ABS is well-calibrated, but the rear tends to lock up a little too easily under hard braking.

The SR 175’s digital TFT console, borrowed from Aprilia’s larger RS 457 and Tuono 457, feels premium for the segment. It’s clear and vibrant, though slightly overenthusiastic, showing both digital and analogue speed readouts at the same time. And while there are two ‘Mode’ buttons on the switchgear, don’t go looking for riding modes — they’re simply for scrolling through on-screen data. A small naming rethink wouldn’t hurt here.

Where the SR 175 really scores is in its value equation. At ₹1.20 lakh (ex-showroom), it undercuts most of its rivals while packing the biggest engine in the sporty scooter segment. Sure, it isn’t the most practical scooter out there — underseat storage is tight, the ride is firm, and there’s no external fuel filler. But the SR was never meant to be a family runabout. It’s always been the scooter for those who treat commutes like mini sprint races.

In that sense, the SR 175 hp-e stays true to its roots. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, just spins it faster and smoother. For riders who grew up admiring Aprilia’s racy appeal and still crave that sharp European edge in their daily rides, the SR 175 delivers just that. For everyone else, there are comfier and more practical options out there.
