The volatile equity markets and cloud over economic growth have taken its toll on inflows into mutual fund schemes including that of SIP in May.

Equity inflows have dipped 40 per cent last month to ₹22,908 crore against ₹38,440 crore in April as investors confidence was shaken by the extreme volatility in the market, according to the Association of Mutual Funds in India data released on Wednesday.

Hybrid schemes inflow was down at ₹10,560 crore (₹20,565 crore) while debt funds registered an outflow of ₹96,949 crore (₹2.47 lakh crore) in May.

SIP inflows dropped marginally to ₹30,954 crore (₹31,115 crore) with the contributing SIP accounts also moving down to 9.64 crore (9.65 crore).

The number of new SIP accounts opened were at 54.16 lakh while that of closed / matured were 51.70 lakh with the overall live SIP accounts of 10.46 crore. The difference between the live SIP accounts and contributing accounts was largely due to pausing of contribution by investors. As per Sebi norms once the pause exceeds three months, the account is treated as closed.

Venkat Chalasani, CEO, AMFI, said the SIP inflows has remained above ₹30,000-mark despite the lower SIP inflows and market volatility reflects investors confidence in MF and long-term growth prospects of India.

Gold has witnessed an net outflow of ₹725 crore (inflow of ₹3,040 crore) for the first time in recent past as investors preferred to book profit after the rise in import duty to 15 per cent pushed up domestic gold prices despite weak global trend, he added.

Silver outflow increased to ₹2,133 crore (outflow of ₹127 crore).

The industry registered a net outflow of ₹64,021 crore (₹3.22 lakh crore) with over all AUM sliding marginally to ₹81.58 lakh crore (₹81.92 lakh crore).

SIF inflow was steady at ₹1,396 crore (₹1,219 crore) with AUM increasing to ₹13,814 crore (₹12.329 crore) in May.
