As Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam tries to shore up support to form the government in Tamil Nadu, the Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Thursday, informed TVK that the requisite majority essential for forming the next government had not yet been established.
The Governor met TVK President Vijay on Thursday morning for more than 40 minutes, the second such meeting between the two leaders in the last 2 days. The Governor explained to him the requirement of demonstrating majority support before staking claim to form the government, as per a release by Lok Bhavan.
TVK has 108 MLAs and, with the support of five MLAs from the Indian National Congress, its strength rises to 113 — still five short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.
As the meeting set off speculation that the Governor had invited Vijay to form the next government, Raj Bhavan sources clarified that no such invitation had been extended, and reiterated that the constitutional requirement of majority support remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, political leaders and constitutional analysts have urged the Governor to invite the TVK, being the single largest party in the Assembly, to form the government and prove its majority on the floor of the House.
