My Teeth Get Complimented Constantly—These Whitening Kits...
Mary Honkus · 2026-06-17 · via Latest Content - Cosmopolitan

Do you know what beauty treatment makes the biggest difference in my confidence before a major event? It’s not a fresh blowout, a pristine manicure, or even a lymphatic drainage massage. It’s whitening my teeth at home.

The best at-home teeth whitening kits aren’t all that different from professional treatments. Many use the same active ingredients, and with a little patience, they can deliver impressively bright results. “At-home whitening uses lower concentrations of whitening ingredients, takes two to three weeks to see results, requires daily application, and is more affordable,” says cosmetic dentist Kevin Faist, DMD. “Think of it as the difference between cooking dinner at home versus going to a high-end restaurant. Both can get you fed, but one is faster and more powerful.”

A sneak peek at the best at-home teeth whitening kits:

  • Crest 3DWhite Easy-to-Use Teeth Whitening Pen

  • 2-in-1 Whitening Pen

  • BrightBoost Whitening Kit

Patience definitely pays off with the best at-home teeth whitening kits. I would know: People constantly ask me where I get my teeth whitened. My secret? Refreshing my smile with a few of the effective picks on this list. Keep reading to discover 9 editor- and dentist-approved whitening kits that will make your pearly whites dazzle.

Crest 3DWhite Easy-to-Use Teeth Whitening Pen

FormatPen
Key ingredientsGlycerin, hyrdogen peroxide

Why we love it: At-home whitening products used to be time-consuming. (Think: strips that need to stay on for 30+ minutes and big, bulky trays that require you to sit like a statue.) This easy-to-use whitening pen propels us into the future, and makes achieving a dazzling smile easier than ever. The convenient brush-and-go gel formula can be applied from anywhere, at anytime, and easily fits in your purse. You can even get a little whitening action after lunch or while traveling. The entire Cosmo team swears by this—so much so, it even won top honors in our 2026 Holy Grail Beauty Awards.

One Cosmo editor says: “I loathe the thick paste and weird taste of whitening strips, but this pen makes brightening my teeth so easy. I just draw on my front teeth with the pen, the way you would with a marker, and after several months of consistent use, my teeth are significantly whiter and just look overall cleaner.” —JASMINE HYMAN, ASSISTANT BEAUTY EDITOR

2-in-1 Whitening Pen

FormatPen
Key ingredientsGlycerol, coconut oil

Why we love it: It’s more difficult to reverse staining than it is to prevent it, but this unique pen does both. Coffee and red wine are two of the biggest culprits behind teeth discoloration, so before taking a sip, swipe on this pen and wait 60 seconds for it to dry to maintain a brilliant smile. The gel is made with oil-based actives rather than harsh hydrogen peroxide, so this can be used daily for extra pearly whites—even if you have sensitive teeth.

One Cosmo editor says: "I low-key hate whitestrips because I'm inpatient and easily agitated, lol. But Lumineux's feel comfortable while also seriously brightening up my teeth only after a few uses." —BETH GILLETTE, BEAUTY EDITOR

BrightBoost Whitening Kit

FormatToothpaste and powder
Key ingredientsSilica

Why we love it: Need some heavy-duty whitening but don’t want to go to the dentist? Boka’s multi-step kit can help—and it doesn’t take much time or effort. Before brushing your teeth with the gentle whitening toothpaste, dip the included brush into the enamel-safe silica-based powder and scrub away noticeable surface stains (as well as plaque) in seconds. You’ll feel fresher, and your smile instantly appears brighter.

One Cosmo editor says: “I’m so bad about using strips and trays, but this two-step system couldn’t be easier to use, so I can actually commit to it. I simply brush with the whitening toothpaste twice a day and then once a week use the scrubby powder to buff away surface stains from espresso.” —LAUREN BALSAMO, BEAUTY DIRECTOR

Epic Whitening Charcoal Fluoride Free Toothpaste

FormatToothpaste
Key ingredientsGlycerin, charcoal powder

Using a pitch-black toothpaste to whiten your teeth may feel counterintuitive, but charcoal is an excellent natural whitening agent that scrubs away stains and polishes teeth for results almost as shiny as a diamond. This toothpaste, in particular, is incredibly enjoyable to brush with because it has an invigorating minty flavor that levels up the freshness as it whitens.

One Cosmo editor says: “Another one that’s so easy to use. I’m obsessed with how well this freshens my breath and keeps stains in check with all-natural charcoal.” —LB

3D Whitestrips Professional Effects

FormatStrips
Key ingredientsHydrogen peroxide

Can whitening strips achieve GOAT status? If you ask dentists, Crest’s 3D Whitestrips certainly deserve it. These come highly recommended from both our experts for their accessibility and ease of use. While each treatment is a bit time-consuming (you’re supposed to wear the strips for 45 to 60 minutes), the results are comparable to in-office whitening treatments for a lot less money. Pop them in while working from home, and you’ll have a blinding smile in a few weeks.

One Cosmo expert says: “They’re popular for a reason. Widely accessible, easy to use, and consistently effective for tackling surface stains and mild-to-moderate discoloration. When used as directed, the hydrogen peroxide formula can produce noticeable results in as little as two weeks.” —Dentist Chris Classi, DMD.

Go 15- Prefilled Teeth Whitening Trays

FormatPre-filled trays
Key ingredientsGlycerin, hydrogen peroxide

Why we love it: If you want professional-level whitening results without visiting your dental office, both of our experts say these trays are the next best thing. The trays cover more surface area, minimizing the possibility of missing a spot or two for effective, all over whitening. “It’s a solid, safe product that’s available in different strengths,” adds Dr. Faist, so you can select the level of whitening you need, based on your concerns.

One Cosmo expert says: “The prefilled trays adapt to the contours of your smile, offering a more even result with less guesswork. Its formula contains ingredients intended to reduce sensitivity and is powerful enough to achieve a significant color change without causing unwanted trauma to the enamel surface. Though highly effective on its own, the product shines as a follow-up to sustain and stretch the results of a professional bleaching.” —Dr. Classi

Gentle Teeth Whitening Enamel Toothpaste

FormatToothpaste
Key ingredientsPotassium nitrate, sodium fluoride

Why we love it: Dentists agree: Whitening treatments won’t give you the best results if you aren’t keeping up with maintenance. That means opting for a whitening toothpaste, and this one comes highly recommended from Dr. Classi. “This daily essential manages post-whitening sensitivity by removing superficial stains while actively supporting enamel health,” he says.

One Cosmo editor says: “I haven’t gotten my teeth professionally whitened in years, nor have I done an at-home treatment in 2026, yet people constantly stop to tell me how white my teeth are. This toothpaste is the only thing I use, so it must be pretty damn effective!” — MARY HONKUS, CONTRIBUTING BEAUTY EDITOR

Teeth Whitening Kit with LED Light

FormatGel with LED light
Key ingredientsCarbamide peroxide

Why we love it: For those who want a ~dramatic~ whitening effect after one or two uses, this LED kit is the thing to buy. The blue light acts as a catalyst for the carbamide peroxide-based whitening agent, making it work faster and produce near-immediate results. Simply apply the gel, pop the LED mouth guard in, and wait 30 minutes. After the light shuts off, your smile will be blinding.

One tester says: “I have tried whitening my teeth with many other products. Most of which were ineffective or too gross to use. I wish I had started with Auraglow. Super easy to use, no sensitivity noticed, and most importantly, highly effective. I saw a difference after the second use and have continued to use it to keep my smile looking bright. The fact that it is affordable is just an extra incentive to keep using it.”

Teeth Whitening Strips

FormatStrips
Key IngredientsGlycerin, coconut oil

Why we love it: Did you know that coconut naturally breaks down stains on teeth? And unlike chemical whiteners, the ingredient is incredibly mild, making whiteners with coconut a wonderful choice for those with sensitive teeth. These strips gradually brighten your smile—your pearly whites won’t be three shades whiter overnight, but they’ll still sparkle by the time you finish a box.

One Cosmo editor says: “I have receding gums, and most whitening kits trigger annoying sensitivity—not this one. The strips might be the gentlest at-home whitener I’ve ever used. I can comfortably go through an entire box without experiencing any soreness. I keep them in my medicine cabinet for when my smile needs a little refresh.” — MH

FAQ

What foods stain teeth the most?

There are several things that can stain your teeth, and it goes beyond coffee and red wine. Tea, dark sodas, berries, tomato-based sauces, soy sauce, turmeric, and beets can also lead to tooth discoloration. “I tell patients to remember one simple rule: If it will stain a white T-shirt, it will stain your teeth,” says Dr. Faist.

Limiting your consumption of these can keep your teeth as bright as possible. But if you don’t feel like you can give up the coffee (I know I can’t), Dr. Classi suggests rinsing your mouth with water after eating or drinking. The best at-home teeth whitening kits can certainly help, too.

What ingredients are best for at-home teeth whitening?

Both of our experts say that hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are the most effective ingredients in at-home whitening kits. “Hydrogen peroxide is excellent at breaking down stain molecules, and is generally worn for 15-45 minutes at a time,” explains Dr. Faist. “Carbamide peroxide slowly breaks down to hydrogen peroxide over time, so it usually requires multiple hours of wear time (sometimes overnight), but it is gentler and less likely to cause sensitivity during whitening.”

How often should I use an at-home teeth whitener?

There’s not a one-size-fits-all answer—it all depends on the treatment you select. Both dentists recommend following the instructions on your chosen kit. “Over-whitening will lead to tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and dehydrated-looking enamel,” says Dr. Faist. He adds that “most people only need occasional touch-ups every few months, depending on their coffee, tea, and wine habits.”
