From what I'm aware, the hippies have origins in radical political and spiritual movements, but got absorbed into the greater youth subculture as the '60s went on and then gradually watered down into a fashion. Same thing happened to the beatniks - began as radicals but gradually devolved into the pop culture image of bongo players in coffee shops. ♥ 4:28pm
