: Show's in three hours! See you then.

Tune in, next month, for a brand NEW Radio Retrofit (3 parts - May 2, 16 & 30). From 1978.

TONIGHT, it's a one hour remix of KFLM, from Santo Domingo High, somewhere in California, 1993.

See you at 8, eastern...

I'm reviewing some very, very old tapes of some appearances I made on my college station's specialty shows, back when SAR was making the transition from streaming to the AM schedule, in 1999. The Bran Flakes get mentioned a couple of times.

We had been in touch at that time too, a year or two before as I remember you sending your first EM tape my way. And yep, still have my SAR green t-shirt from just shortly after.

You were one of the first stars of the show. My college station had a format where there was a playlist, but between every song on the playlist, there were like two slots for freeform "Whatever" for the djs to play whatever they wanted. I followed that format, myself and had collage "hits" which I programmed around whatever I felt like that week. I remember it was you, ECC, negativland, PLU, the tape-beatles and maybe a dozen others. I made a compliation for the other djs to pull from, too.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm
Austin Rich: I feel like my DJ record is tarnished. I need another chance to prove myself, coach. I promise; I can do it, next time!

Ah, that's fantastic. The Whatever parts would be my favs, personal picks of the djs.

KFLM is a defunct high school radio station which Parker Lewis and his friends discover under layers of dust, behind a locker at their california high school on the old show, "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" from 1993.
Avatar 8:20pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:08

I really liked the show in high school. It debuted in 1991, I think?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Otis:

↳ postconsumer @8:19

I had just looked it up. Have heard of the show name but was mid-20s at that time... but if I was in high school it would have been on my viewing radar.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:21pm
Austin Rich:

↳ postconsumer @8:19

Ahhh! This was one of those shows that was either on at a bad time, or something, because I have no memory of seeing it, just the ads for it. 91 - 93 were prime High School years, so I was probably pre-occupied with something / someone, in favor of watching TV.
Avatar 8:23pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:21

I think it was supposed to be an homage to Ferris Bueller's Day Off, from what I've read. There was actually a Ferris tv show on another network, around the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm
Otis: Some killer tracks this week of the time. Dead Milkmen, Digable Planets, Bikini Kill... all resonate, bring back memories.
Avatar 8:24pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:21

lucky you! I was too shy to ask a girl out properly, in those days. Or any days, really. Now that I think about it. 😂
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm
Austin Rich: I know this is a "remix" version; I recall you aired a version of this a while back. What is different about this version?
Avatar 8:25pm
postconsumer: Luckily, one or two asked me out. I might have been single to this day.
Avatar 8:26pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:25

The music order and quite a few of the tracks are different.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Austin Rich:

↳ postconsumer @8:24

Well, "pre-occupied with someone" did not mean I was talking to them or seeing them. It's a long and boring and embarrassing story, unfortunately. Aren't they all?
Avatar 8:27pm
postconsumer: I always try to take the tastes of the djs into consideration. It's not just what I like, it's what they would play. And the original version leaned too hard into what suburban teenagers in the early nineties would have been playing. In other words, what I liked THEN, vs what I still like, now...
Avatar 8:29pm
postconsumer: Whenever I do a remix (which is more often than I wish it was), it's because I can't stand to listen to the original mix anymore. I'm trying to make radio programs which are evergreen (to me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm
Otis:

↳ postconsumer @8:27

I hear that, first time listening live but have checked out a couple in the archives, especially the WKRPs which were very very cool!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Austin Rich: I've been struggling with the role that nostalgia plays in my life these days; I guess being 50 does that to you. I feel like my default is to lean on nostalgia for entertainment and comfort, but lately, a lot of things that push those buttons don't feel as comfortable as they used to. I'm not sure what to make of it, but I find it very difficult to revisit certain things from my past. Nostalgia is a complicated beast.
  8:31pm
Charles:

↳ postconsumer @8:27

You do a great job at that. Not only is it good music but it never feels dissonant with what the DJ(s) of the moment would play. It helps with the immersion a lot!
Avatar 8:31pm
postconsumer:

↳ Otis @8:29

Thanks! A minneapolis station just played the Venus Flytrap episode last Friday. That felt really really good.
Avatar 8:32pm
postconsumer:

↳ Charles @8:31

Thanks, Charles! I take it really seriously. The Venus episode is a good example as I was largely unfamiliar with the kind of music he was playing. I had to do a LOT of research for that one. Whereas this one, was pretty easy
Avatar 8:35pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:30

could be a lot of things. We're very different people from when we were in our teens and 20s, for one thing. I cringe a lot, looking back. Or it could be just realizing how good we had it, comparatively. The things which worried me then seem so quaint compared to these days...
Avatar 8:37pm
postconsumer: Speaking of research, the next edition of Radio Retrofit streams May 2, MAy 16 and MAy 30, and is based on a movie with a famous soundtrack. A soundtrack I wasn't super thrilled with, personally, so I had to expand my research and ponder for a long time before I could put together something I'd want to listen to.

kind of! I listened to airchecks from the Los Angeles radio stations which the movie was said to be based upon.
Avatar 8:43pm
postconsumer:

↳ postconsumer @8:43

and followed THEIR lead, instead of the movie...
Avatar 8:44pm
postconsumer: LA radio in the mid seventies was wild. Big commercial radio stations were practically freeform, at times, and in places
Avatar 8:45pm
postconsumer: I had a lot of fun putting it together.
Avatar 8:47pm
postconsumer:

↳ Austin Rich @8:30

plus, a lot of what we loved back then was a reflection of the times, which are very different than the current times. Some of my favorite movies have some questionable content, for sure.
