Greetings Mona! Present.
When I was in high school in NYC (class of 85 or "Alive In '85!") the Goth kids were a small group, they really stood out. I received some good recs on music from one particular fellow student who happened to be a Goth. Had no idea what all the fuss was about - all black, pale skin, a little dark makeup - so what, the music is good.
I see those same people once in a while, they're the same people as they were but now they don't stand out as much as they did.

Depending on your tastes, I would say start with either The Good Son (gentle), Let Love In (rocking), or Abbatoir Blues/Lyre or Orpheus (double record that is rocking, dramatic, and gentle).
