I've tuned in to Mecum auctions channel recently to eyeball the gleaming classic muscle cars. Is there a streamed auction of classic racing and recreational bicycles you can -- and would -- watch?
I've noted before when this concert is excerpted that I was at the show the day before this, 5/7 in Boston. (Also a good one...fans say.) And the soundboard recording exists, of course. You could play that and I could keep saying aloud in my living room, "I was there....yeah, was there. I was. Yeah."

Those are all of a bunch of recordings collectively known as "The Betty Boards" (for sound engineer Betty Cantor). This recording became a staple, not because of its unique quality, but more because it was in circulation long before may of the other Betty Boards were. There's a story about them being found in a trove of reels in a storage locker.

Logging into rateyourmusic site to see what Dead albums I have listed as in my LP collection, the site algorithm lists for me 10 recent releases that might interest me, 5 of them are The Grateful Dead. First on the list: Dave's Picks, Volume 58, Tampa FL 12/18/73.
That sorta exemplifies why I gave up "collecting" Dead recordings. Too much to try to keep up with, so, I'm content to hear what I hear here.
It's prohibitive IF you want LP versions of all this live material that has recently been released (I got one box, Wembley Empire Pool, London 4/7/72, but I'd be in the poor house if I continued getting these). I do have a lot in digital form, though, more than I'll probably ever get to listen to...

It was probably in part a consequence of the advent of in-ear monitors. When the stage got quiet, there was no center-wash. You'd pretty much only hear what was in the PA on your side.

for either lost planet airmen or dead
Never heard it either...but the common trope is that when it sounded bad, it sounded bad...but when it sounded good, it sounded amazing. They could do a residency at Winterland and get it dialed...but touring with it...well. And it cost a ton to transport, and more to maintain.

The only time I saw the Dead wasn’t in the Wall of Sound era, but the setup sounded absolutely great.
(They were using a bunch of identical-looking stackable modular speaker blocks, apparently full-range because they had big drivers for bass and smaller drivers for higher frequencies), all powered by racks full of Crown amps.

Near-field monitors are great; but they are designed for mixing: they deliver flat response, so they are flattering to recorded sound, I.e. all that sucks in the source material sounds not so great, just as it should. They aren’t really for conventional listening. They also throw a field at the engineer’s head, not the room. Some of them bridge the gap, though….but as studio monitors, therefore, they’re not great.

No, I just found I had a fascination for what went into making records. Used to read Stereo Review faithfully back in the 70s….I was in sound studios used for post-production in TV a lot tho….thus my studio near-field monitor know-how….acoustics with science …very interesting…it relates to soundwaves made by musical instruments and the air and physics….nerd paradise
...although let me suggest, as strongly as I dare, that those shopping for studio (or wherever) monitors with a decent budget make sure they consider PSI Audio monitors from Switzerland. So good.

StringOFperils: Near-field monitors are great; but they are designed for mixing: they deliver flat response, so they are flattering to recorded sound, I.e. all that sucks in the source material sounds not so great, just as it should. They aren’t really for conventional listening. They also throw a field at the engineer’s head, not the room. Some of them bridge the gap, though….but as studio monitors, therefore, they’re not great.

Used to read Stereo Review faithfully back in the 70s….I was in sound studios used for post-production in TV a lot tho….thus my studio near-field monitor know-how….acoustics with science …very interesting…it relates to soundwaves made by musical instruments and the air and physics….nerd paradise
