Keith Pelley of the Maple Leafs

MLSE president and CEO Keith Pelley was grilled by a reporter for his hiring of John Chayka as the new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On Monday, the Maple Leafs officially introduced Chayka as the team’s new general manager and franchise legend Mats Sundin as a senior advisor to the organization. The team had conducted a thorough search for the team’s next management role, with Pelley admitting they had talked to 27 potential candidates for the Maple Leafs’ leadership job.

But Pelley ultimately chose to go with Chayka, who is considered a bit of a controversial hire due to his checkered past with the Arizona Coyotes. Still, as Pelley said numerous times during the press conference, he was confident that the Maple Leafs made the right decision, as he truly believes Chayka is the right man for the job.

Reporter Grills Keith Pelley Over Hiring John Chayka

One of the most memorable moments of Monday’s press conference was when veteran sports reporter Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun grilled Pelley for hiring Chayka. You can watch the video below and draw your own conclusions about the encounter, which went viral on social media.

Wow.

Steve Simmons says he spoke to 20 people around the league. 1 supported the Chayka hiring, 19 said it was a “sham” and called Chayka a “con artist,” “liar,” “salesman”

Nobody around the league respects Chayka. Wow. 😬

It was a tense situation, one that Pelley was criticized for by some fans, as he essentially dodged the question that Simmons asked. Other fans, however, thought Simmons was too harsh, given it was an introductory press conference. Still, the tough line of questioning from Simmons made for a viral moment on social media, and got fans once again thinking if Chayka is the right man for the job or not. According to Pelley, he is, but it remains to be seen if that’s the case.

Keith Pelley Says Give John Chayka a Chance

The main takeaway from Monday’s press conference is that Pelley wants Maple Leafs fans to give Chayka a chance. Despite everything that fans have been hearing about him online as of late, and what they heard about him during his time in Arizona, Chayka is clearly a smart individual who has previous experience managing a team in the NHL. Yes, the Coyotes were indeed a bad team, but not all of that is Chayka’s fault, as he alluded to during the press conference, given that his former team dealt with many ownership issues during his time in the desert.

Ultimately, Pelley just wants the fans to give Chayka and Sundin a shot to show that they are the right people to lead the Maple Leafs out of the basement and back into being Stanley Cup contenders. After all, it can’t get much worse than this past season, where the Leafs embarrassed their fans with a last-place finish in the Atlantic Division.

For a storied franchise with so much history surrounding it, seeing them lose so many games was hard for anyone to stomach. As MLSE president and CEO, Pelley saw a team that needed a vision change, and he believes that Chayka and Sundin are the right people for the role. It remains to be seen, however, if they will be, or if all of the sources telling Simmons that this is a bad hire will be the ones ultimately proven right.
