The Philadelphia 76ers fired president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey, after the franchise was swept in the second round of the NBA Playoffs by the New York Knicks.

Following the Philadelphia 76ers‘ second-round exit in the NBA Playoffs, the franchise decided to part ways with president of basketball operations, Daryl Morey.

Morey held the position for the 76ers over the past six years, finishing with a 270-212 regular-season record and reaching the postseason in five of those seasons.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl personally and professionally, and I’m grateful for his contributions over the last six seasons,” 76ers managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. “After speaking with Daryl (Morey), we determined that it was time for a fresh start.”

Bob Myers, who led the Golden State Warriors to four championships, will serve as the interim head of basketball operations and lead Philadelphia’s search for Daryl Morey’s replacement.

Tim MacMahon: ‘(Daryl Morey) Does Not Believe in Basketball Chemistry.’

Following the 76ers’ sudden firing of Daryl Morey, the basketball world reacted. ESPN insider Tim MacMahon had some harsh words for the NBA businessman while speaking with Brian Windhorst on The Hoops Collective podcast.

“Daryl’s arrogance has backfired on him repeatedly over the years,” the insider said. “He rubs people the wrong way and I would say his biggest failings as a basketball decision maker is he’s never been a guy who valued, or even frankly considered, the human element. (Morey) does not believe in basketball chemistry.”

“He is a spreadsheet basketball genius… It’s a fascinating tenure. There were a lot of highs and lows. There were a lot of big swings… At the end of the day, all of these different things didn’t work, and the 76ers continued to disappoint.” MacMahon said.

It’s safe to say that the insider wasn’t a fan of Morey’s work as the president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers over the past six seasons.

Breaking Down Daryl Morey’s Timeline with the 76ers

2020: After the 76ers brought in Daryl Morey after his Houston Rockets tenure, he began by hiring Doc Rivers as the franchise’s head coach. This didn’t pan out for either side. Rivers led Philadelphia to a 154-82 regular-season record, but would be eliminated in the second round of the NBA Playoffs in three consecutive seasons. This led to Rivers’ firing in 2023.

Morey’s biggest positive from his tenure came this year, as the 76ers drafted Tyrese Maxey with the No. 21 pick.

2022: Morey helped orchestrate the deal that sent former No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons to the Brooklyn Nets. The 76ers ultimately got James Harden in return, but this relationship didn’t pan out.

2023: James Harden would ask for a trade ahead of the 2023 season after Philadelphia declined to extend him. He would later be dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers after 79 total games played with the franchise.

2024: Philadelphia would sign unrestricted free agent Paul George to a four-year, $212 million contract. George has yet to pan out for the 76ers, playing in just 78 total regular-season games in two seasons.

The 76ers would also decide to sign Joel Embiid to a three-year, $192.9 million contract extension in 2024. The deal is yet to work out for the 76ers, as a pattern of Joel Embiid’s injuries began following his MVP season in 2022-23. Over the last three seasons, Embiid has played just 96 regular-season games.

2025: Philadelphia was dealt the No. 3 overall selection in the 2025 NBA Draft, using this pick to take guard VJ Edgecombe. The Baylor prospect finished third in Rookie of the Year voting this year while averaging 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

2026: One of Daryl Morey’s final roster moves took place at the 2026 NBA trade deadline, moving Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick (via Houston) and three second-round picks.

Morey said the motive behind the deal was “selling high,” while arguing that the draft compensation had better long-term value than keeping Jared McCain on the roster.
