LeBron James #6 of the Los Angeles Lakers

NBA icon LeBron James will enter free agency this summer, and one NBA insider believes four teams are willing to make offers for the superstar. Los Angeles Lakers’ fans still hope to keep LeBron, but there will be competition looking to impress him with offers. The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers are two teams that have been rumored for months now.

However, insider Marc Stein revealed that there will be contract limitations for both teams:

“The Golden State Warriors, who league sources say have maintained a longstanding interest in bringing James to Northern California, will be severely limited in what they can offer.

James’ hometown Cleveland Cavaliers have even less financial flexibility than the Warriors and are so far away from all the Tinseltown ties that LeBron and his family have established during this run as a Laker … but no one wants to totally rule that one out because of the storybook ending factor.”

Both teams will have less financial flexibility to offer a big contract and would require LeBron to take a pay cut to join either franchise. Golden State would hope to trade for another star to tempt James into the idea of contending with his former rival. Cleveland likely wants LeBron to join their current roster as the missing piece, assuming they fall short of a title this postseason.

Two Dark Horse Teams Interested In LeBron

Only two other teams were named by Stein when listing teams having a realistic chance at even entering conversations with LeBron this summer. The New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers were both mentioned as dark horse candidates to land the icon.

Stein shared the following thoughts about the Knicks and Clippers being on James’ radar:

“James’ deep fondness for Madison Square Garden has been known for years, but the Knicks — suddenly favorites to win the East and go to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 — could certainly opt to stay on their current path.

The only other team you could credibly add to the shortlist is the Clippers, who employ James’ former Cavaliers coach (Tyronn Lue) and do play in Los Angeles.”

New York would likely have to fall short of an NBA Championship for LeBron to join their roster and help them get over the top. The Clippers are a long shot since their roster is less talented, but Stein cited that James loved playing for head coach Ty Lue in the past.

Lakers Still Have Best Chance At Keeping LeBron

Stein listed all the realistic options, but he made sure to mention that the Lakers hope to keep James. Some disconnect between the two parties have created a scenario of LeBron leaving, but it doesn’t mean it’s a likely scenario.

James loves living in Los Angeles and showed that he fits into the team over this past season, even when asked to take a back seat to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Rumors indicate that LeBron is willing to take a smaller contract for the chance to contend.

The Lakers must re-sign Reaves and add other depth first to fully tempt James into re-signing on a smaller contract. LeBron’s dream scenario would most likely see him retiring in Los Angeles and having a chance to contend for another NBA Championship.
