Wordle is officially coming to NBC.

The network has handed a series order to the Jimmy Fallon-produced game show adaptation of the much-loved New York Times word puzzle game with Savannah Guthrie hosting.

It comes after Deadline revealed that the network piloted the project last year.

The new format challenges players to solve five-letter word puzzles in a battle of smarts, speed and fun. It builds on the way the puzzle community engages with Wordle every day — solving together, sharing wins, debating strategies and cheering one another on. Now, that style of play comes to life as the most obsessed and competitive players will team up in squads and go head-to-head in the Wordle arena, playing for an incredible cash prize, per the logline.

It’s not yet clear whether the show will air in the summer or midseason.

The series comes from Universal Television Alternative Studio (UTAS), in partnership with Jimmy Fallon’s Electric Hot Dog and The New York Times. Fallon will exec produce.

Deadline understands The New York Times began exploring the idea of a Wordle television game show and chose to partner with Fallon and develop the idea with UTAS for the network.

It comes after the newspaper acquired the game, which was created by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle, in 2022. In 2024, it was played 5.3B times, up from 4.8B plays in 2023.

The show joins Fallon’s Password, which was renewed for a third season, on NBC.
