The wait is over in the Motor City. The 2026 schedule for the Detroit Lions has officially been released, and it features everything fans could ask for: primetime matchups, a historic international game, NFC North rivalries, and a brutal late-season stretch that could define Detroit’s playoff hopes.

After missing the postseason in 2025 with a 9-8 record, head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes enter 2026 with expectations once again rising in Detroit. The NFL clearly believes the Lions remain one of the league’s biggest draws, awarding them multiple nationally televised games and several marquee matchups throughout the season.

Detroit opens the season at home on Sept. 13 against the New Orleans Saints before immediately being thrown into the spotlight in Week 2 with a Thursday Night Football showdown against the Buffalo Bills. 

The early part of the schedule is packed with tests, including matchups against playoff-caliber teams such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, and division rivals from the NFC North.

One of the biggest headlines of the entire NFL schedule release is Detroit’s trip overseas. In Week 10, the Lions will face the New England Patriots in Munich, Germany as part of the NFL International Series. 

The matchup marks Detroit’s first international regular-season game under Campbell and represents another sign of the franchise’s growing national and global popularity.

The NFL also loaded Detroit’s schedule with nationally televised games. Reports indicate the Lions will play at least four primetime contests during the season, continuing their rise from rebuilding franchise to league attraction. 

Ford Field is expected to once again become one of the loudest environments in football, especially during divisional games against the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings.

Thanksgiving remains a major spotlight game for Detroit, with the Lions hosting the Bears in the annual holiday tradition. While some fans hoped for a fresh opponent, the matchup still carries major intrigue because of the growing NFC North rivalry and the continued rise of Chicago under head coach Ben Johnson, Detroit’s former offensive coordinator.

However, the biggest storyline surrounding the schedule may be the ending. Detroit faces an extremely difficult closing stretch, with three of its final four games coming on the road against NFC North opponents.

 Trips to Chicago and Green Bay late in the season could bring harsh winter conditions and playoff-level intensity, while every divisional matchup could have postseason implications.

Another concern is the Lions’ early bye week in Week 6. Many analysts believe the early break could become problematic later in the year, especially with the added international travel and demanding division-heavy finish.

Still, there is plenty for Lions fans to be excited about. The team will once again be featured prominently on the national stage, and the schedule offers opportunities for statement wins against some of the NFL’s top contenders. 

With stars like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Aidan Hutchinson leading the way, Detroit enters 2026 believing it can compete for another playoff berth and potentially much more.

The road will not be easy, but one thing is certain: the 2026 Lions season is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining years in recent franchise history.
