Shaping the future of Irish women’s rugby in Ireland

The women’s team of Blackrock College RFC occupies a unique place in Irish sporting history as one of Ireland’s longest-established teams and pioneered the formation of the All-Ireland League (AIL) for women as well as the Irish Women’s Rugby Football Union (IWRFU).

Founded in 1991, the team was created at a time when opportunities for women in rugby were scarce. Its early members broke new ground, challenging perceptions and building a foundation for the growth of the women’s game nationwide. What began as a small but determined group has evolved into one of the most respected and successful clubs in the country.

Over the decades, Blackrock has consistently contributed to the development of elite rugby talent, producing players who have gone on to represent Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Ulster and Ireland. Yet its influence extends far beyond the elite level. The club has remained deeply rooted in its community, fostering participation across all ages and abilities, and championing inclusivity in sport long before it became a wider movement.

Recent years have seen Blackrock’s women’s team reach new heights on the field. Their landmark AIL victory in 2022 marked a defining moment in the club’s history, underlining decades of hard work and dedication. That success cemented their status among the top teams in Irish women’s rugby. Building on that achievement, the club once again demonstrated its competitive strength by reaching the AIL final in the Aviva Stadium in 2026, reaffirming its place at the forefront of the game.

Increased visibility, growing participation, and rising standards have transformed the landscape, and partnerships like the one with Pinergy are crucial in sustaining that momentum. By supporting Blackrock, Pinergy is investing in a legacy that continues to shape the future of rugby in Ireland.

This collaboration brings tangible benefits, from enhanced training resources to the expansion of minis, youth and grassroots programmes. More importantly, it sends a strong message about the importance of supporting women’s sport at every level. It highlights how corporate partnerships can play a meaningful role in driving equality, opportunity, and excellence.

For Blackrock College RFC, the partnership is another chapter in a pioneering journey that spans decades. For Pinergy, it is an opportunity to align with a club that embodies determination, heritage, and ambition. Together, they represent a powerful blend of tradition and innovation that will help ensure the continued growth and success of women’s rugby in Ireland for years to come.
