Ukrainian forces struck the Dubna Satellite Communications Center in the Moscow region overnight on June 22, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ General Staff reported.
The military said the facility was hit, with large-scale smoke observed at the site, and that damage was still being assessed.
Kosmicheskaya Svyaz, the center’s parent company, confirmed the strike, saying the facility had come under a mass drone attack.
“Television broadcasting and communications have not been disrupted. Measures are being taken to address the aftermath. The center’s personnel were not harmed,” the company’s press service said.
The Dubna Satellite Communications Center was launched in 1980 as an Olympic facility. During the Moscow Olympics, its role was to broadcast the Games to countries in Europe and the Atlantic region. After the Olympics, the center was tasked with maintaining a direct government communications line between the Kremlin and the White House.
According to the Russian Satellite Communications Company’s website, the center is now Russia’s largest teleport and one of the largest in Europe, handling a wide range of satellite communications tasks.
