Debolal Gorlosa, Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council, has asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to secure a decisive victory in the 113 No. ST-reserved Haflong Assembly constituency.

Addressing a press conference at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhavan in Umrangso on April 26, Gorlosa stated that the BJP is expected to garner between 75,000 and 85,000 votes in the constituency. He said the estimate is based on inputs received from party booth-level committees, mandal units, and members of the autonomous council.

Gorlosa maintained that opposition parties, including the Indian National Congress and the National People's Party (NPP), would not be able to mount a significant challenge in the constituency. He noted that while limited competition may be seen in one or two of the 28 constituencies under the council within the Haflong Assembly segment, the remaining areas are expected to witness minimal contest.

Providing projected figures, he said the Congress may secure between 30,000 and 35,000 votes, while the NPP could receive between 15,000 and 20,000 votes. He added that the Congress may emerge as the second-largest party owing to its existing support base, though he remarked that its past development efforts did not meet expectations.

Referring to development plans, Gorlosa stated that if BJP candidate Rupali Langthasa is elected as MLA, efforts would be undertaken to accelerate development in Umrangso, which he described as the industrial hub of Dima Hasao district. He also outlined proposals for the development of an airport in Umrangso and highlighted the region’s potential in the tourism sector.

Gorlosa further stated that measures would be taken to address unemployment and that plans are under consideration for establishing a cement industry in the region.
