The Joint Tribe Council, Manipur (JTCM) on Saturday, June 27 rejected recent remarks made by the Kuki-Zo Council regarding the killing of six Naga civilians and demanded immediate action to identify and arrest those responsible.

Addressing a press conference at Thangjing Hall of the Manipur Press Club in Majorkhul, JTCM Co-Convenor KC Savio strongly objected to statements attributed to Kuki-Zo Council Chairman Henleinthang Thanglet, which reportedly described the killings as an emotional outburst and referred to the victims using terminology that JTCM termed inappropriate and unacceptable.

Savio alleged that the six civilians were subjected to a brutal attack and asserted that the incident should not be interpreted as an isolated emotional reaction. He called for a thorough investigation and immediate arrests, expressing concern that no accused persons had been apprehended so far despite the gravity of the case.

He also criticised what he described as inadequate action by both the state government and central security agencies in addressing the incident.

During the press conference, JTCM reiterated its demand for justice and stated that it would continue its agitation until those responsible for the killings are identified and brought to justice.

The council further raised concerns regarding issues of land, settlement and security in the state, alleging that indigenous communities are facing increasing challenges. JTCM leaders urged the government to take measures aimed at maintaining peace, ensuring accountability and preventing further escalation of tensions.

Speaking at the same event, JTCM General Secretary Dr. Aku Newmai warned that the families and the organisation may refrain from claiming the bodies of the six victims if their demands remain unaddressed.

Newmai stated that continued delays in identifying and apprehending the accused could aggravate public dissatisfaction and urged authorities to act swiftly to prevent further deterioration of the situation.

The council maintained that prompt legal action and accountability would be essential to restoring public confidence and ensuring justice for the victims.
