This Checkpoint pinball machine is one of approximately 3,500 examples produced by Data East of Tokyo, Japan, in 1991. The auto-racing-themed arcade game has a color dot-matrix display, an ignition key to start gameplay, player-selectable music, flippers, bumpers, drop targets, slingshots, and a glass playfield cover. The cabinet features a playfield illuminated by multicolor LEDs, coin slots, and a shaker motor that simulates engine rumble. Acquired by the seller in 2024, this Checkpoint pinball machine is now offered at no reserve in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Founded in Japan in 1976, Data East produced a variety of pinball machines between 1987 and 1994. Checkpoint was introduced in 1991 and was the first pinball machine to include a dot-matrix display that shows gameplay information, including high-speed records and accumulated points. Racetrack imagery, including Porsche 356 and 911 models in racing livery, is displayed on the illuminated backglass. Stereo speakers are positioned at the bottom of the backbox and covered with checkered graphics.

Additionally, the cabinet art and playfield were restored and clear-coated, a playfield protector was added, and the lockbar, side armour, and legs have been powder-coated.

The playfield has two flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, drop targets, and a kick-out hole. Up to four players can compete in a round of play, and each can select accompanying music from genres such as country, rock, jazz, rap, classical, and soul. Gameplay is initiated using a start key, and a shaker motor integrated into the cabinet simulates engine rumble. A “Lasermatic” speed ramp challenge translates ball movement into a notional vehicle speed, allowing players to advance the playfield tachometer, earn points, and set high-speed records. Balls can be launched onto the playfield via the spring-loaded plunger or the automatic ball shooter. Up to three balls can be in play simultaneously.

The front panel features double coin slots, coin-return receptacles, a 917-style game-start key, a 917-inspired wooden shifter-style ball launcher, and a locking door.

The playfield can be pivoted upward to access components mounted beneath it.
