Best Bedding for a Soft, Lived-In Feel: Boll & Branch
Boll & Branch Signature Hemmed Sheet Set
Boll & Branch Down Duvet Insert
Boll & Branch is best known for the texture of their linens, which feel like they’ve been run through the wash several times (in a good way). No fraying or pilling, just that coveted softness which feels lived-in, but not worn out. Of all the materials contributor Rachel Fletcher tested from Boll & Branch—percale, Supima cotton, flannel, and linen—she was particularly impressed by their signature sateen bedding that’s made from long-staple cotton and has a wonderfully gentle finish. “That extra-soft feel, paired with the lovely, cooling properties, make them feel like the luxury sheets they are,” she says. If you already know and love the sheets, the retailer also sells everything from mattresses to bedroom furniture.
Best Value Bedding: Quince
Quince European Linen Sheet Set
Quince Premium Down Comforter
Quince is an AD-approved brand for wallet-friendly staples. We’ve named their European Linen Sheet Set the best affordable option on the market, and senior shopping editor Nashia Baker notes that they are one of her new favorite places to shop. “The price point is unbeatable, and I love that they offer bedding sets in beautiful colorways and a variety of fabric options,” she says. “The quality is also impressive, especially considering the affordability.”
Take these 100% European flax sheets that sell for a fraction of the price of their competitors, thanks to the company’s innovative supply chain structure that cuts out the middle man to avoid extra costs in the distribution process. “I love its airy nature along with the gorgeous Bordeaux color that complements the rest of my decor,” says Baker. Beyond sheets, Quince’s bedding collection also features quilts, coverlets, and more, plus we’ve rated their down comforter as one of the best on the market.
Our Best-Kept Bedding Secret: Garnet Hill
Garnet Hill Cozy Ticking Organic Cotton Flannel Sheets
Garnet Hill Agnes Quilt
Shopping market editor Kate McGregor calls Garnet Hill her “secret spot.” The sentiment is shared by many on our shopping team, with rave reviews from writer Julia Harrison and contributor Yelena Moroz Alpert. Harrison goes all in for their flannel sheets, and confesses she keeps them on through May because “they’re so soft, I’d rather suffer in my own sweat than switch them out.” The ticking stripe is “perfectly classic—like a true vintage piece, but not actually vintage…that might be tough sell in the bedding department.” Alpert also loves her flannel pick, a duvet cover that “signals a cottagecore moment without going over the top.” Paired with her Ostermoor duvet insert, it’s “like climbing under a layer of meringue.” The brand’s calling card is creating vintage designs, like aspirational patchwork quilts, at realistic price points and with feel-good materials, like 100% linen and 100% cotton. No gimmicks, just great bedding.
Best Cooling Bedding: Cozy Earth
Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheet Set
Cozy Earth Bamboo Down Alternative Pillow
Cozy Earth specializes in breathable bedding designed to make you feel cooler while you sleep. Take their signature bamboo bedding, made from 100% viscose. “I honestly thought these sheets were silk,” says contributor Megan Wahn. “That’s how smooth and soft they feel.” Wahn primarily tested these sheets in the winter, and they kept her warm despite their cool-to-the-touch hand feel. “I’m especially eager to see how they perform in the summer,” she adds. “Something about their smoothness makes me think the summer-night sweats won’t stand a chance.”
Best Bedding Product Range: Brooklinen
Brooklinen Washed Linen Core Sheet Set
Brooklinen Down Comforter
Though Brooklinen launched with only cotton percale and sateen sheets, their collection has since expanded to include everything from cashmere to brushed flannel options in all kinds of prints and fabrics. Helpfully bundled in deluxe sets or sold individually, you can find so many great bedding staples at a happy midpoint in price between truly budget retailers and their more luxury-minded peers. Their linen sheets are especially beloved by our editors, who consider them year-round staples.
“Since I don’t live my life on a Greek island, I thought white linen sheets year-round might be a slightly bold move, but the nature of the fiber is versatile and temperature regulating,” shares AD contributor Madeleine Luckel, who tried the Core Sheet Set. Fletcher cozies up with the brand’s Luxe Sheet Set, and gives them high marks for beating the heat. “I’m a hot sleeper with sensitive skin, and they’re really cool on my skin at night, which is a huge relief,” she says. “I love the breathability of these sheets.”
Best Bedding Color Range: Bed Threads
Bed Threads Organic Cotton Percale Sheet Set
Bed Threads French Flax Linen Duvet Cover Set
Gone are the days of plain white bedding. We love Bed Threads colorways, which can take you from a warm vanilla sheet set to a moody cacao linen duvet fit for a room in your favorite mystery novel. “Bed Threads is one of my favorite bedding brands for some color,” Baker says. “They have the widest range and some of the richest colors to mix and match, so it’s especially nice if you want a color-block bedspread.” As the owner of the brand’s cotton percale sheets, Baker also notes they didn’t require a break-in period. “The percale had a softness to it right out of the package which was a nice surprise. Some other percale sheets I have needed a few washes to soften up, but this set had a light crispness to it without feeling too starchy.”
Best Coastal-Inspired Bedding: Serena & Lily
Serena & Lily Nantucket Stripe Linen Sheet Set
Serena & Lily Baywood Quilt
If you’ve ever daydreamed about designing your home like it is plucked from a Nancy Meyers film, we think Serena & Lily is the way to go shopping-wise. Even though they’re headquartered in sunny Sausalito, California, the brand’s textural, breezy bedding and decor were designed for any coastal escape. From the Bay Area to Nantucket, there’s no shortage of inspiration thanks to their range of lightweight linen to crisp percale cotton bedding in serene colorways and prints.
Baker has tested a lot of bedding items over the years, but she says the Nantucket Stripe Sheet Set is a favorite for its lightweight, “worn-in texture,” which keeps it soft—not scratchy. The linen set’s ruffle lining is another bonus, adding a thoughtful touch to keep her bedscape from looking boring. “The striped mink print does give a seaside vibe, but it’s been neutral enough to layer with any color bed cover without clashing with the rest of my minimal, romantic decor over the few months I’ve tested the set,” she adds. Consider pairing it with the scalloped-edged Baywood Quilt, which Alpert hails as the perfect light blanket to use “when you want to throw something over while you read your favorite Emily Henry book in bed.”
Best Bedding Patterns: GreenRow
GreenRow Helena Floral Sheet Set
GreenRow Willow Patchwork Quilt
GreenRow creates charming and enduring designs with recycled and sustainably sourced materials. The brand has impressed a number of the Shop AD team, with Alpert going so far as to call the Helena Floral Sheet Set, “without a doubt, the softest sheets I own.” She describes the cotton satin as a velvety-smooth fabric that’s further elevated by the butter yellow florals and green micro-gingham ruffle. Meanwhile, McGregor loves the brand’s reversible patchwork quilt. “It’s the kind of blanket that feels substantial without trapping heat or feeling stuffy,” she notes. “I feel cocooned without a down comforter, but I’m not smothered when I sleep sans AC in the warmer months. It’s a year-round bedding piece for me, especially since the color palette can lean moodier or more cheerful depending on my sheet selection.”
Best for Bedding Details: Rebecca Udall
Rebecca Udall Thea Scalloped Bed Linen
Rebecca Udall Georgiana Ladderstitch Duvet Cover
If there’s one new name to have on your radar, it’s Rebecca Udall. The designer’s eponymous bedding brand boasts some of the most romantic, careful details, like decorative embroidery in soft colors across its sheets. McGregor’s latest obsession is this scalloped percale sheet set. “The feel is like a washed percale, crisp but forgiving, and I find that the subtle color on the detailed edge gives the perfect amount of visual interest to my all-white bedscape,” she says. Or, for a more subtle approach, the Georgiana duvet cover features barely-there ladderstitch detailing, hand-embroidered by local artisans in Northern Italy.
Best for Organic-Cotton Bedding: Parachute
Parachute Percale Sheet Set
Parachute Organic Cloud Cotton Duvet Cover Set
The hunt for classic, well-crafted cotton ends at Parachute. You’ll find bedding sets, bundles, and more—all made with sustainability in mind. The percale and brushed cotton are top-of-the-line and made by artisans at Parachute’s factory in Portugal.
“We love [Parachute] because the bedding is designed to provide a hotel-like experience, offering a perfect balance of softness and crispness,” Kraus says, whose clients are fans of the brand’s linen bedding sets. “They become softer with each wash while maintaining their durability and are super soft to sleep in every night.”
In her assessment of Parachute’s organic bedding, Fletcher noted how Parachute prioritizes organic and ethically sourced materials. For example, the Organic Cloud Cotton Duvet Set is made with Oeko-Tex-certified 100% cotton. “I try a lot of bedding in this line of work and the more I do, the more I appreciate ethical and organic production, even if the price tag is a little higher,” she says.
Best Fashion-Forward Bedding: Magniberg
Magniberg Blue Wall Street Patchwork Duvet Cover
Magniberg Mother King Pima Cotton Fitted Sheet
Another impressive emerging bedding brand, Magniberg is the brainchild of Swedish designers Bengt Thornefors and Nina Norgren. Together, they’ve taken a fashion-inspired approach to styling your bedscape, encouraging shoppers to “dress your bed just as you dress yourself.” Case in point: the Wall Street Pima Cotton Duvet Cover, which gives a laidback take on the stuffy button-ups often donned by stock traders in the Financial District. For a solid pick, there’s also this fitted sheet, designed to feel like your favorite cotton poplin shirt.
Best for Linen Bedding: Coyuchi
Coyuchi Organic Relaxed Linen Sheet Set
Coyuchi Cascade Organic Matelasse Blanket
Coyuchi and sustainability are the peanut butter and jelly of the bedding world. The line of bedding, particularly the brand’s linen sheets, are known for certified organic ingredients such as 100% organic flax from France that is grown without fertilizers or pesticides. You can also snag percale, sateen, and flannel sheets. Their earth-toned colorways are yet another reason to shop at Coyuchi.
“I love the color, which is what drew me to these sheets in the first place,” says Sam Cochran, global features editor. “They’re the perfect brown—a tad auburn, ever so slightly timeworn in palette.”
Best for Handmade Bedding: Erica Tanov
Vintage Kantha Quilt
Erica Tanov Cypress Washed Linen Sheet Set
Erica Tanov’s bedding catalog delivers unrivaled craftsmanship, with hand-embroidered designs inspired by traditional Indian textiles in 100% linen, handmade by artisans in Jaipur. Harrison calls hers “a lifetime set” that “draws more compliments than anything else in my apartment.” She attests to the high-quality of the linen: durable and soft. She takes this sheet set to her local laundromat, and even in the harsh tousle of a communal washer/dryer, this set comes out unscathed. It’s the first linen set she’s found to be “city-friendly,” as she calls it. She’s yet to try their quilts or throw blankets, but knows exactly what singular item will be on her birthday wishlist this year (spoiler: it’s this).
Best for Timeless Colorways: Cultiver
Cultiver Silk Linen Flip Pillowcase
Cultiver Linen Sheet Set
To achieve that effortless, beachy style, look to Australian brand Cultiver for linen sheets and duvets. Their pieces are an investment (a queen-sized duvet and sheet is nearly $400), but the Oeko-Tex certified pieces are well worth the splurge. The linen coverlets are oversized to achieve that minimalist drape, while the envelope-backed pillow cases are structured without feeling fussy. Fletcher can attest to the longevity of the sheets after much use and countless wash cycles. “Linen is my bedding fabric of choice pretty much 365 days a year, and Cultiver’s high-quality sheet sets do it for me in a way no other brand has. Out of all the sets I’ve tried, this one has stood the test of many washes, my dog digging in them to get cozy at night, and surviving across seasons without feeling worn or threadbare,” she says.
Most Luxe: Frette
Frette Colour Block Duvet Set
Frette Graphite Pinstripe Sheet Set
Frette is another name in Italian linens to know that’s been decorating iconic Mediterranean interiors since 1860, including the abodes of actual royalty. They peddle all kinds of sumptuous linens and exquisite sheet sets, like these delightfully color-blocked sheets. Frette’s signature cotton sateen gives this set a crisp texture reserved for luxury hotel rooms, and its sea blue colorway delivers a shoreside experience regardless of location that pairs best with an open window, an ocean breeze, and breakfast in bed.
FAQs
What Bedding Do You Need?
That very seriously depends on a few things, namely feel preference and how well your thermostat works. If you like the crisp coolness of hotel sheets, try percale. If you like a soft, organic feel, try linen for a breezy texture, or bamboo sheets for something similar to silk. Cotton sheets (like Supima sets) are often the most durable over time, especially after many, many washes. Your warmest options are generally flannel sets, and your coolest are generally bamboo and percale. When considering how to set up your bed, we always recommend a full sheet set (that includes flat sheets, people), as well as a duvet insert with a cover. The cover allows your duvet insert to stay protected and keeps it from getting dirty, so you only need to wash it around the six-month mark, instead of every week or so like you might with your sheets. Harrison likes to go one step further with a bed blanket underneath her duvet and above her sheets for a bit of weight and additional warmth. A quilt or coverlet can be used in place of a duvet if you prefer something with a bit more weight than a duvet typically has, which are known for being fluffy.
What to Look for When Buying Bedding
Material is everything! You’ll want to look closely at what your bedding is made of. Search for 100% cotton, linen (the more organic, the better), and steer clear of polyesters or more plastic fibers, as they’re likely to pill more quickly and break apart in the washer and dryer.
