U.S. tech employment regained momentum in April, with job postings reaching a three-year high and tech hiring swinging back into positive territory, according to new data from CompTIA.

Employers across all industries posted 271,483 new technology job listings during the month of April. In all, there were more than 575,000 active job postings for tech positions nationwide, according to CompTIA’s analysis of Lightcast job posting data and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data, as cited in the company’s press release.

Tech occupation employment, which includes IT professionals working across all industries, increased by 260,000 jobs in April, lowering the unemployment rate for tech occupations to 3.5%, based on CompTIA’s analysis of BLS data.

“The factors that created pressure on tech occupations throughout 2025 appear to be easing, as employers clarify their AI strategies and renew progress on digital transformation initiatives,” said Seth Robinson, vice president, industry research at CompTIA, in a statement. “The increase in job postings, which include a range of technology roles, confirms the need to build core tech skills as a foundation for more advanced capabilities.”

Despite the overall gains in job postings, tech industry employment declined by approximately 6,300 jobs in April, according to CompTIA’s analysis. The CompTIA Tech Jobs Report shows that staffing reductions in telecommunications and cloud infrastructure, data processing, and hosting occupations offset modest employment gains in IT and custom software services and systems design.

Demand remains strongest for core technical roles. Job postings for systems engineers and architects have increased by 42.7% since January, while software developer and engineer postings have increased by 32.3%. Cybersecurity roles rose 23.2%, and tech support specialist postings increased 16.1%, according to CompTIA.

The report also highlights accelerating demand for AI talent. There were 18,138 job postings for AI engineers in April, an increase of 3,440 from the prior month, based on CompTIA’s analysis of Lightcast data. The report also shows a broader rise in job listings requiring AI-related skills, indicating that AI capabilities are increasingly embedded across a wide range of technology roles

Geographically, hiring gains were widespread. Washington, D.C. (+1,945) and New York (+1,771) led month-over-month increases in tech job postings, followed by Philadelphia (+1,452), Chicago (+1,407), and San Francisco (+1,339), according to CompTIA data. The report also shows demand across experience levels. About 20% of job postings targeted workers with zero to three years of experience, while 28% sought candidates with four to seven years, and 17% focused on those with eight or more years, according to CompTIA job posting data.

Across industries, professional, scientific, and technical services led hiring demand with 76,830 tech job postings in April, followed by administrative and support services (33,738), manufacturing (32,924), information and media (20,638), and finance and insurance (17,436), according to the CompTIA Tech Jobs Report.
