LeBron James reacts during a Los Angeles Lakers game before Rockets playoff series

LeBron James reacts during a recent Lakers game as he prepares for the playoff series against the Houston Rockets after revealing he’s been dealing with an illness.

LeBron James revealed he’s been dealing with an illness just days before the Los Angeles Lakers open their playoff series against the Houston Rockets, offering a candid update ahead of Game 1.

Speaking after Thursday’s practice, James addressed his noticeably hoarse voice and offered a brief explanation.

“I don’t yell at anybody. I’ve been kind of sick,” James told reporters.

The update comes at a critical time for the Lakers, who are preparing for Game 1 on Saturday at Crypto.com Arena without key playmakers Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, both of whom remain sidelined indefinitely.

LeBron James Illness Adds to Lakers’ Playoff Challenge vs Rockets Rebounding Edge

James’ health adds another layer of uncertainty for a Lakers team already navigating a difficult matchup against a physically imposing Houston squad.

The Rockets led the NBA in rebounding (48.1 per game) and offensive rebounding percentage (47.2%) during the regular season, a strength that could prove decisive in a playoff series built on second-chance opportunities.

James did not offer a lengthy message when asked about matching Houston’s physicality.

“I don’t have a message,” he said. “Just get your ass in there, box out and rebound. I don’t have a message. We’re all grown men. Do your job.”

LeBron James Emphasizes Focus and Execution Ahead of Game 1 vs Rockets

Despite the illness, James stressed the importance of preparation and attention to detail heading into the postseason as the Lakers ramped up the intensity of their practices heading into Saturday’s game.

“You’ve got to be locked in,” he said. “We’ve had some really good days over the last couple of days, another one tomorrow, and a little bit of time on Saturday for Game 1.”

The Lakers enter the playoffs after a strong finish to the regular season, winning their last three games, but face a Rockets team built on effort, rebounding and defensive intensity.

LeBron Enters Playoffs in Strong Form Despite Injury History

James missed 22 games this season, including 14 to open the year due to a sciatic nerve issue, but he enters the postseason in strong form.

He was named Western Conference Player of the Week after averaging 24.0 points, 9.7 assists and 6.0 rebounds while leading the Lakers to a 3-1 finish to close the regular season.

The surge came as Los Angeles adjusted to injuries to Doncic and Reaves, placing more playmaking responsibility on James.

“Trying to make plays, I had to tap back into a role I’ve been accustomed to in the past,” he previously said. “Circumstances have put me back in trying to feed off my teammates … and just trying to make things happen for us.”

Earlier this month, James joked about the unpredictability of his availability.

“I tell my teammates all the time, I go to bed, I’m available for the game, and I wake up, I’m [expletive] doubtful,” James said. “Every single time.”

LeBron’s Health Looms as Lakers Open Playoff Series vs Rockets

There has been no indication that James’ illness will impact his availability for Game 1, but the timing underscores the challenges facing the Lakers early in the series.

With multiple rotation players sidelined, the Lakers will rely heavily on their veteran star to stabilize the offense and lead a group facing one of the league’s most physical teams.

Game 1 between the Lakers and Rockets is set for Saturday night in Los Angeles at 5:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
