Lakers star Luka Dončić’s return timeline is becoming clearer after treatment, as a new update signals when he could be back.

Luka Doncic has progressed to on-court movement, but the Los Angeles Lakers are still not committing to a return timetable.

Speaking before Game 4 against the Houston Rockets, coach JJ Redick said Doncic has begun incorporating movement into his rehabilitation from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain.

“He just continues to kind of do some stuff on the court,” Redick said, via Benjamin Royer of the OC Register. “Was able to move a little bit today on the court, which, you know, most of the stuff has been standstill. So he’s progressing, but no update on any timeline or anything like that.”

The update marks a notable step forward for Doncic, who has not played since early April after suffering the injury.

Luka Doncic Injury Update Comes as Lakers Close In on Series

The Lakers enter Game 4 with a 3-0 lead after a 112-108 overtime win in Game 3, where they overcame a six-point deficit in the final 25 seconds of regulation.

Los Angeles has managed the series without both Doncic and Austin Reaves, relying on execution, defense and late-game composure to take control.

LeBron James Anchors Lakers Without Luka Doncic

With Doncic sidelined, LeBron James has assumed the primary role in orchestrating the offense.

James is averaging 25.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 8.7 assists through three games as the Lakers seized a 3-0 lead over Houston.

The 41-year-old has dictated tempo and created late-game offense, including during the Game 3 comeback that underscored Los Angeles’ ability to close under pressure.

James finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in a 112-108 overtime win, delivering the decisive stretch late in regulation. After a pair of miscues, he responded with a steal with 20 seconds left, then a game-tying 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining.

Scoring Title Highlights Luka Doncic’s Impact

Despite missing the final stretch of the regular season, Luka Doncic secured the NBA scoring title with 2,143 total points.

He averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds, becoming the first Los Angeles Lakers player to win the scoring title since Kobe Bryant in the 2006-07 season.

The milestone capped a dominant first full season in Los Angeles, where Doncic emerged as the focal point of the offense and helped guide the Lakers to a top-four seed in the Western Conference.

Hamstring Recovery Remains Key Factor for Return

Doncic’s shift from stationary drills to movement marks progress, but several steps remain before he can return to game action.

Recovery from a Grade 2 hamstring strain typically requires full-speed work and lateral movement before clearance, particularly for a player whose game relies heavily on balance, change of direction and physical contact.

The Lakers have taken a cautious approach throughout the process, prioritizing long-term availability over a potential early return.

Game 4 Presents Closeout Opportunity For Lakers

Game 4 offers the Lakers a chance to complete a sweep and advance to the second round.

While Doncic’s progress adds a new layer to the series outlook, Los Angeles has already established a formula for success without him — one built on defensive discipline, controlled possessions and late-game execution.

For now, the Lakers remain focused on closing out the series while continuing to monitor Doncic’s recovery.
