Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel reacts on the sideline as the team confronts a potential firing decision, with the Dianna Russini scandal driving betting odds and intensifying scrutiny around his future.

The Patriots are confronting a potential Mike Vrabel firing decision as the Dianna Russini scandal sparks betting odds and scrutiny of Vrabel’s continued role, even after he became only the fourth head coach in New England franchise history to lead the team to a Super Bowl.

Vrabel guided the New England Patriots to a 14-3 record and a Super Bowl appearance in his first season as head coach, earning AP NFL Coach of the Year honors. Three months later, prediction markets are giving roughly one-in-three odds he will be fired before the year is out. The fallout has already shifted betting markets. Now the question is whether the Patriots are forced to act next.

Both Polymarket and Kalshi currently set the chances of Vrabel being ousted at 31 percent. On Kalshi, which tracks the contract under “Pro Football Coaches Out Before September,” total volume has surpassed $675,000 as of Sunday, according to data on the platform. The numbers reflect a month of public fallout that shows no signs of stopping.

Mike Vrabel Firing Odds Climb as Russini Scandal Deepens

The scandal began April 7, when Page Six published photographs of Vrabel and then–The Athletic NFL reporter Dianna Russini at the Ambiente resort in Sedona, Arizona. Both are married, but not to each other. Vrabel has been married to his wife, Jen, since 1999. Russini wed husband Kevin Goldschmidt in 2020.

Russini resigned from The Athletic on April 14 while the outlet’s internal standards review remained open. The NFL announced it would not open a personal conduct policy investigation into Vrabel. Then the photos kept coming.

On April 23, Page Six published newly surfaced images from March 11, 2020, showing Vrabel and Russini at the Tribeca Tavern in New York City. An eyewitness told the publication the two were “all over each other” that evening. At the time, Vrabel was coaching the Tennessee Titans and Russini was covering the NFL for ESPN, raising even more questions about her reporting during his tenure there.

According to Sports Betting Dime reporter Brady Trettenero, the Kalshi market jumped seven points in a single day after the 2020 photos surfaced, spiking to 40 percent before settling back to 31 percent.

Vrabel Sits Out Draft Day 3 for Counseling

Hours before the 2020 photos dropped, Vrabel released a statement to ESPN disclosing he would miss Day 3 of the NFL Draft to begin counseling.

“I promised my family, this organization and this team that I was going to give them the best version of me,” he said in the statement. “In order to do so, I have committed to seeking counseling, starting this weekend.”

NFL Network insider Peter Schrager reported that Vrabel and the organization mutually agreed he should not be interrupted during the counseling, according to Musket Fire reporter Sara Marshall. General manager Eliot Wolf confirmed Schrager’s account after the draft concluded.

The Patriots issued a statement of support, noting the organization “fully supports” Vrabel’s commitment to his family and well-being. Owner Robert Kraft has given no public indication a firing is under consideration. Kraft would be dismissing his Coach of the Year less than a year into a tenure that produced a Super Bowl run, and it would mark the third head coaching change in three seasons in New England.

The 31 percent figure is not a majority. But on a market with more than $675,000 in volume, it is not noise either. The story has moved markets twice. Depending on what comes next, the scandal could move them again.
