The Pittsburgh Steelers signed undrafted free agent center Greg Crippen for extra depth behind Zach Frazier.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a change to their roster after the team’s rookie minicamp. It came at center behind starter Zach Frazier.

The Steelers announced Monday the team signed undrafted free agent Greg Crippen. The center tried out at Pittsburgh’s rookie minicamp from May 8-10.

“Crippen played college football at the University of Michigan, where he appeared in 41 games in his career, starting 21. He started all 13 games at center for the Wolverines during the 2025 season,” wrote Steelers.com’s Teresa Varley.

“Crippen was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection in 2025, a five-year letter winner and a four-time Academic All-Big 10 selection (2022-25). He shared offensive player of the week honors for his performance against Nebraska.”

In a corresponding move, the Steelers released offensive lineman Sataoa Laumea on Monday.

Crippen was one of 12 players who tried out for the Steelers at rookie minicamp. As of 4 pm ET Monday, he was the only tryout player who made the team’s roster.

Steelers Sign Greg Crippen for Zach Frazier Center Depth

With the arrival of Crippen, the Steelers now have three centers on their offseason roster. Frazier will return for his third season as the team’s starter.

Frazier was a Day 1 starter for the Steelers after the team drafted him at No. 51 overall in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Through two seasons, Frazier has started 31 of a possible 34 regular season games.

Before Monday, the only other center on Pittsburgh’s roster was Ryan McCollum.

Like Frazier, McCollum has been on the Steelers roster since 2024. McCollum has provided depth along the interior offensive line. But he has primarily played center. McCollum started two games at center in 2024 and one last season.

All 21 of Crippen’s college starts at Michigan came at center. As Varley indicated, Crippen started all 13 of the team’s games at center during 2025.

Steelers Waive Sataoa Laumea to Make Room for Crippen

The team kept its roster size the same after signing Crippen by releasing a former sixth-round pick.

The Seattle Seahawks drafted Laumea at No. 179 overall during the 2024 NFL Draft. He started all six games in which he appeared for the Seahawks as a rookie.

Last season, Laumea spent time on the Seahawks and New Orleans Saints practice squads.

In January, the Steelers signed Laumea to a reserve/futures contract. He didn’t participate (he wasn’t eligible) at the team’s rookie minicamp from May 8-10.

Before his release, Pittsburgh had the former Seahawks draft pick listed as a guard on the team’s official offseason roster.

At Steelers rookie minicamp, Crippen wasn’t just the only center but the only offensive lineman who tried out. Of the 12 tryout players for Pittsburgh, four were linebackers and three were punters.

None of them have been added to the roster.

Of the 12 tryout players, five of them played college football at Pitt or Penn State. None of those players initially made the Steelers roster either.

After a short break, the Steelers will begin offseason workouts again on May 18. The team will have two rounds of three practices at the end of May before mandatory minicamp on June 2-4.

Pittsburgh’s final round of offseason workouts will happen June 8-9 and June 11-12.
