The perfect honeymoon looks different for every couple. Some might want laid-back lunches on sandy beaches; others, a hideaway in the middle of nowhere or a front-row seat to some of the world’s most iconic views. But there are a few essentials: namely, a space to disconnect (from the stresses of everyday life), and to reconnect (with each other). And what better way to achieve it than with a private vacation rental, where there’ll be no dining shoulder-to-shoulder with other hotel guests, no shared terrace for sunset drinks… in fact, no neighbors in general?

The Best Honeymoon Airbnbs, According to Vogue:

But the options can feel endless, and often hard to narrow down. Will you journey to the other side of the world, or stay closer to home? Is a terrace for two the key to a romantic stay? A private pool? A nearby beach? Perhaps all three. Do you want a home in the heart of a quaint neighborhood, or space away from it all?

Whether located on the Amalfi Coast or a Greek island, in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest or overlooking a South African mountain range, snuggled into a Parisian mansion or cocooned inside a Balinese garden, we pulled together an edit of the best Airbnbs for your honeymoon. And there’s one thing they all have in common: privacy. Most come with a view you’ll never forget, too.

Nature takes the lead at this treehouse, a five-minute walk from Playa Pátzcuaro Sur on Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit. Built within a fig tree (yes, really), trunks and branches form part of the structure, cutting through the bedroom floor and escaping out of its ceiling. You’ll wake up to the sounds of the jungle, and spend your days hopping from beach to waterfall to natural pool.

Ask your hosts about the nearby amphitheater—from time to time, they organize shows spanning music, dance, and art. They’ll also be able to create custom experiences for you, including sunset picnics, sound baths, massages, and photoshoots.

Amenities: AC, kitchen, outdoor dining area

Location: Riviera Nayarit, Mexico

Pull back the floor-to-ceiling glass doors at Villa Kaz, and let your eyes linger. First at your infinity pool surrounded by palms, then at the shallow bay of Anse de Grand Cul-de-Sac and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Wraparound doors open up almost every wall of this villa, elevating an indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

Dining takes place in an open-air pavilion, an outdoor shower complements the bathroom, and the bedroom terrace with sea views is a peaceful spot to wake up in. Located hillside, this is a private spot for two, but nothing is very far away—least of all Grand Cul-de-Sac beach, where slow days are peppered with watersports, sunbathing, and beachfront dining.

Rooms: 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

This design-first, glass-fronted villa surrounded by Costa Rican jungle overlooks the country’s wild Pacific Coast; its outdoor pool and terrace suspended—almost impossibly so—above a leafy rainforest canopy of tropical palms, ferns, and vines. From somewhere among the treetops you’ll hear the calls of toucans, macaws, and monkeys, perhaps spotting the occasional whale breaching in the ocean beyond. Nearby waterfalls, beaches, whale-watching excursions, and a national park beckon, but the most romantic moment of all will probably be dinner and drinks on the terrace, as the setting sun merges into a glittering nighttime starscape.

Location: Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Green Whisper House

Suspended above the Atlantic Forest in Itacaré, on Brazil’s east coast, dense green jungle stretches as far as your eyes can see from all angles at this treehouse, enveloping you in a world where it’s just you two. Constructed using reclaimed wood and piassava palm, open-air floating platforms extend toward the tropical rainforest (the rooms are divided just by linen curtains). Take it all in from the perfectly placed hammock or the private pool. You might find it difficult to make other plans (we won’t blame you), but if the mood strikes, you’re close to beaches, and your hosts can arrange yoga, massages, and sound healing, among other locally inspired experiences.

Imagine your perfect Positano hideaway. Somewhere with quintessential cliffside views, located in one of the most historic areas of the Amalfi Coast. This is it. Inside this 18th-century home, Italian craftsmanship reigns. Ornate ceilings, stucco relief, and grand chandeliers draw the eye up; tiled flooring, framed doorways, and late-Baroque frescoes fight for your attention.

But, as pretty as it all is, it’s the outdoor terrace that steals the show. Beyond its reclaimed Vietri sul Mare majolica tiles, colorful houses tumble down Positano’s cliffside toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. There are 50 steps to reach this home, but each one is worth it to wake up with a cornetto, coffee, and one of the most coveted views in the world. The only problem is, you’ll never want to leave.

Amenities: AC, kitchen, outdoor dining area

We’d expect nothing less than a romantic getaway on the island that produced the Venus de Milo, the marble sculpture depicting the Ancient Greek goddess of love. And there’s no Milos experience more coveted than that of staying in a converted fisherman’s hut (which are called “syrmata” in Greek). We’ll admit, some are a little run down, but this one, located in Klima, has everything you need to make your honeymoon unforgettable.

Inside it’s all stone walls with rustic wooden furnishings, but it’s the seaside location that makes it so special: terrace doors open to a balcony overhanging the sea. Your own private slice of the Aegean—take it all in before going for your daily dip.

Any honeymoon in the City of Love should have a touch of cinema about it, and at this early-1900s private mansion, even the kitchen feels grand. It’s whimsical and eclectic in all the right ways; wake up to fresh coffee under high, chandelier-strung ceilings, and a breakfast of flaky pastries beside marble fireplaces and a gold flamingo statue. The nearby Panthéon—the resting place of philosophers and writers including Voltaire and Rousseau—grounds you in Paris’ academic Latin Quarter, as do the books stacked floor to ceiling in one of the apartment’s two bedrooms. Mid-century and contemporary art, design, and furnishings stop it all from feeling trop cliché.

Rooms: 2 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms

Amenities: Kitchen, washer, elevator

Location: Paris, France

Tussenklip Honeymoon Suite

Cocooned between two giant granite boulders, Tussenklip—an informal way of saying “between a rock and a hard place” in Afrikaans—lives up to its name in the best, albeit most literal, way. Ancient rockface takes the place of traditional walls in the kitchen and bedroom of this two-story accommodation. Head outside to the outdoor terrace for dramatic mountain views. It’s on that terrace that the best dinners take place, grilled up on the barbecue and eaten under the nighttime sky. Mornings are slow, spent sipping coffee and listening to the sounds of nature—and you’re only a 30-minute drive from Kruger National Park, home to the Big Five.

A modern take on traditional Balinese design, local limestone and wood encase this two-bedroom home, where tropical luxury comes into its own. Every room opens up to the outdoors, making the tropical garden feel like a continuation of the living area: It’s mere steps from bed to pool from the main sleeping area, and the outdoor bathroom comes with a double shower. Design touches like rattan weave, terrazzo floors, and Indonesian-style art anchor you in Bali, as does the surfboard storage at the side of the house—you’re only a 10-minute walk from the popular surfers’ hangout, Suluban Beach, after all.

Nelum Villa

At Nelum, on Sri Lanka’s chilled-out south coast, days start with a poolside breakfast of coconut roti, eggs, avocado, and smoothies, before unfurling in a haze of palm-tree-lined beaches, seafood by the shore, and feet-in-the-sand sunset drinks. This villa embraces the barefoot lifestyle, with tropical foliage, earthen walls, and palm-thatched roofs.

If you’re so inclined, there’s a growing surf scene on the nearby beach, and you’ll never be far away from a yoga shala—but save time for romantic days à deux back home too. You can make the most of time together with an in-villa massage arranged via the host, or chill out on the double daybed that hovers over your private pool, in the outdoor bathtub, or at the sunken lounge.
