The Los Angeles Lakers enter Game 6 with a clearer injury picture — but the one name that remains carries the most weight: Luka Dončić.

After a 99-93 Game 5 loss to the Houston Rockets, which trimmed their series lead to 3-2, the Lakers released an injury report that listed only Dončić. Under normal circumstances, that would signal relative health.

This isn’t normal.

Luka Dončić Injury Status Continues to Shape Lakers’ Outlook

GettyLuka Dončić stands with teammates during the Lakers’ playoff game as his injury timeline extends beyond the first round.

Dončić remains sidelined with a hamstring strain — an injury that, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania, is expected to keep him out not only for the remainder of this series but potentially into the next round.

“Luka Dončić is out for this series,” Charania said on ESPN’s Get Up on Thursday. “He’d be out if the Lakers start their next round… the hope would be at some point in that second round he would start to ramp up.”

That timeline leaves the Lakers navigating the most important stretch of their season without one of their primary offensive engines — even as he stands as the lone name on the injury report.

Austin Reaves Return Provides a Boost — But Questions Remain

The return of Austin Reaves in Game 5 offered a needed lift, even if it came with expected rust.

Back from a nearly month-long absence due to an oblique strain, Reaves scored 22 points and helped stabilize stretches of the offense. But his efficiency — and the team’s overall rhythm — reflected the challenges of reintegrating a key piece mid-series.

Reaves went just 4-for-16 from the field and finished minus-5 in 34 minutes, numbers that underscored both his importance and the adjustment still required.

His presence matters — but it hasn’t solved everything.

Lakers Rotation Under Scrutiny Ahead of Game 6

With Dončić out and Reaves working his way back, the Lakers’ rotation has come into sharper focus.

Six players logged 31 or more minutes in Game 5, highlighting both reliance on the core group and a growing lack of trust in the bench.

Lineup decisions have also shifted. Reaves opened the second half in place of Luke Kennard, who struggled mightily — missing all four of his shot attempts and finishing with just one point after a strong start to the series.

Meanwhile, the supporting cast failed to provide a consistent impact. Jake LaRavia, Jarred Vanderbilt and Jaxson Hayes were part of a group that collectively posted a minus-20, offering little scoring or stability.

The contrast was stark.

Houston’s bench — led by Josh Okogie, Aaron Holiday and former Laker Dorian Finney-Smith — combined for 18 points and a plus-13 differential, swinging key stretches of the game.

For Los Angeles, bench production told a different story: 22 of the unit’s 26 points came from Reaves alone.

That imbalance has raised questions about whether adjustments — including redistributing minutes or expanding opportunities for players like Bronny James — are necessary heading into Game 6.

Game 6 Becomes Defining Moment for Lakers

The Lakers once held a commanding 3-0 series lead. Now, after back-to-back losses, they face a critical Game 6 on the road with momentum shifting.

LeBron James acknowledged the urgency after Game 5.

“We don’t have a lot of time to dwell on it,” he said. “Once we get on that plane… we’ve got to forget about it and understand what we’re going for.”

Without Dončić, that margin for error continues to shrink.

Health No Longer the Excuse — Execution Is

With only one player listed on the injury report — even one as significant as Dončić — the Lakers are otherwise operating with a full roster.

That removes one variable.

What remains are the questions that will decide the series: Can Reaves regain form quickly? Will the rotation tighten or expand? And can the Lakers generate enough offense without their sidelined star?

Game 6 will begin to answer all of it.

And for Los Angeles, the stakes have rarely been higher.
