The Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for multiple scenarios hours before the 8:30 p.m. ET Game 1 tip-off of their playoff series against the Houston Rockets.

Kevin Durant is listed as questionable for Game 1 due to a right knee contusion, but early indications suggest the injury may not be serious, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

“A source told ESPN that Durant sustained the injury during practice this week, but the Rockets are optimistic his knee will not be a significant issue during the series,” MacMahon reported.

(UPDATE: Durant has been officially ruled out for Game 1, Rockets coach Ime Udoka told reporters pregame.)

Durant, 37, averaged 26.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists in his first season with Houston, playing in 78 games — his highest total since 2018-19.

He also logged the second-most minutes in the NBA this season and is just 15 points shy of 5,000 in his playoff career, underscoring his importance to the Rockets’ offensive structure.

A fully healthy Durant presents one challenge. A limited version presents another, and that uncertainty forces the Lakers to remain flexible in their approach.

Lakers Dealing With Major Injury Absences

The Lakers are facing significant injury concerns entering Game 1.

Coach JJ Redick has ruled out Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves indefinitely, leaving Los Angeles without two of its primary playmakers.

Despite those losses, former NBA champion Danny Green believes the Lakers have shown resilience.

“They showed some togetherness… they looked like a good collective,” Green said, pointing to the team’s recent stretch despite missing key contributors.

Game 1 also carries broader significance, as it could be the final playoff meeting between LeBron James and Durant.

James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds this season at age 41, while Durant extended his streak to 19 consecutive seasons averaging at least 25 points per game.

They have faced off three times in the postseason — all in the NBA Finals — making this their first opening-round matchup and potentially their last playoff meeting.

Lakers Emphasize Team Defense Against Durant

Even if Durant plays, any limitation could affect Houston’s offensive rhythm. Still, containing him remains the Lakers’ top priority.

Jarred Vanderbilt emphasized that slowing Durant will require a collective effort.

“It takes everybody. It won’t be one guy’s assignment,” Vanderbilt said after Friday’s practice. “He’s a hell of a talent. We’ve seen what he can do in playoff settings. It’ll be a group assignment. Every time he’s on the floor everybody has to have a head on a swivel and he’s pretty much the most dangerous person on their team so it’ll be all hands on deck, it’ll be everybody.”

That mindset underscores the challenge Durant presents, even if he is not at full strength.

For the Lakers, defensive execution and discipline could be just as important as offensive production, given their injury situation.

As Game 1 tips off, the combination of Durant’s uncertain status and Los Angeles’ need for a collective defensive effort sets the stage for a matchup that could hinge on adjustments as much as star power.
