The weekend series between the Yankees and Reds continues in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon with the latter’s starter entering in strong form.
The matchup was set to feature two arms who have been throwing well lately, but the Bombers’ Gerrit Cole, who hasn’t missed a beat since completing his comeback from Tommy John surgery, was pushed back to Monday to get some extra rest.
Instead, it’ll be Elmer Rodríguez on the mound for the Yankees, who have a tall task ahead of them offensively.
Cincinnati counters with breakout right-hander Chase Burns, who is pitching about as well as anyone in baseball, against the Aaron Judge-less Yankees lineup.
Burns has a 2.01 ERA with 95 strikeouts in 80 ⅔ innings heading into Sunday’s game, putting him squarely in the National League Cy Young conversation.
He’s only getting better of late as well.
Since May 14, no qualified pitcher has struck out more batters per nine innings (12.56) and only seven have a better ERA (1.87).
In all six starts since that date, Burns has punched out at least seven batters.
The Yankees have held their own with Judge and Giancarlo Stanton sidelined, but they’ve seldom seen a pitcher like Burns this season.
If Burns carries his strikeout stuff into Yankee Stadium, runs will be at a premium for the pinstripes.
