Stop & Shop is slashing prices at stores in New York-area stores — with local staples like bagels and smoked salmon coming in as much as 23% below their usual prices as the affordability crisis continues to strain shoppers.
The price cuts will roll out across Stop & Shop’s 137 stores in New York and New Jersey — with chain president Roger Wheeler calling it a permanent “pricing reset” so its customers can get some relief.
“Our first goal is to really acknowledge where our customers are at right now, and what they’re feeling,” Wheeler told The Post.
“People are having a hard time, stretching their budgets and having to make tough choices,” he added. “First and foremost, we’re trying to be in tune to where our customers are right now.”
The price changes come after years of customer comments about surging prices across the country, which Wheeler explained started rolling in around the COVID pandemic in 2020.
And those affordability woes have grown increasingly loud in recent months as gas prices have soared beyond $5 per gallon in some parts of the country, while the price of groceries have risen 2.9% in the last year.
Energy prices are also increased by 3.8% from March to April — and are up 17.9% from last year, the US Labor Department reported Wednesday.
“Affordability complaints against the world have gone up dramatically in the last few years,” Wheeler said. “People aren’t just feeling it at the supermarket. It’s just become harder for families and just to stretch everything.”
Stop & Shop’s “price reset” follows a company-wide initiative that started two years ago, with stores in the Quincy, Mass.-based retailers home market already seeing cuts.
Other New York favorites seeing price drops include Nathan’s Beef Franks, with costs down 28% — while Memorial Day staples like kaiser rolls are dropping 9%.
Rotisserie chickens are getting cut by $1 — to $6.99.
Celebrations will also be more special, with 7-inch single-layer cake prices being reduced by 23%.
“It’s an opportunity for us to retain our loyal customers,” Wheeler said. “But also to have people who might not be shopping at Stop & Shop come and give us a try.”
